“Not worth a penny”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 November 2011

I am certainly not going back. Ever. Considering the price is actually equal to many B&B in Cambridge, you may as well call this place a fraud.
The common areas look sad and run down, the bedroom was small and barely furnished, there wasn't a bedside lamp for a start, so you had to get up to switch off the light before going to sleep. The mattress was extremely uncomfortable, so was the pillow. And the curtain did not block any light at all.
The blanket was not enough to keep you worm, and there was no extra one laying around, and you are threatened to be charged double if you touch the other bed.
But the worst feature by far was the shared bathroom and toilet. It had not been cleaned! There was actually a puddle of hair in the bath's hole, no soap (So much for all the adverts reminding to wash your hands!) and no toilet paper in the toilet.
Of course, they offered no breakfast, but in retrospect that's probably not a bad thing...

“More of a hostel than a guest house”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2010

Unfortunately we read the other reviews on Trip Advisor after we had booked, and it was too late to cancel without being charged as we had given the owner our credit card details. It did mean however, that we went to the guest house prepared and with low expectations. We knew that it was room only with shared bathrooms.
We were given a family room instead of a double. It was grubby and shabby, with minimal furniture. There were facilities to make tea and coffee and the tea and coffee were replenished every day, but the cups were not washed/ changed. The tray they were on was dirty and was not wiped during our stay. The back was coming off the wardrobe, the wall mounted TV had no working remote control and reception on it was poor. The curtains didn't hang properly and the light over the sink didn't work. The owner gave us a bedside lamp when we reported that the sink light didn't work, and he was helpful and pleasant towards us.The bedding was clean and the bed was OK. The shared toilet and bathroom were reasonably clean, but the shower was old.
The location was OK and free parking was another positive. However, over all, the poor facilities at the guest house meant that it didn't provide good value for money.

“Disgusting! Horrible! Run Down! Depressing!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2010

Having stayed in many B&Bs all over the country, I can say without reservation that this B&B was the most awful and dreadful one I've ever had the misfortune of staying at. Why? Where to begin, as the list is endless.

Upon arrival, I rang the door bell and it took far too long for the owner/manager to come to the door and greet me. His English was poor and his manners were nearly non-existent. One of the first things he said was that had put me in a family room as the single room was no longer available. He said he was going to charge me the single rate as I was on my own. He wanted payment before he would show me to my room or give me the key.

We went up the stairs and there was a drunk man in his pants/briefs passed out on the floor of the hall. The smell of alcohol was very strong. He asked me to wait downstairs while he assisted the man to the shared toilet and then his room. After he came down a few stairs to wave me up. He showed me in to the room.

At first appearance, it looked ok; tired and shabby but ok. He said that I was to choose one bed to sleep in and that is all. He said if I slept in any of the other beds or used the towels on them, he would have to charge me the full rate for the room. He was quite rude about it. He told me to put the key in the box when I left in the morning and that there was no breakfast provided, but I could use the microwave, refridgerator and dining tables down stairs.

The breakfast room consisted of a few old tables and mismatched chairs, a old refridgerator with a dirty disgusting microwave on top of it. What a horribly depressing place to have breakfast and start the day. I opted to go to a shop some distance away for pastries for breakfast. It was hard to relax in the room due to the noise from other guests. The television was mounted on the wall and there was no remote control for it. I did try laying on two of the beds without disturbing the bedding linens or towels, as I did not want to be charged any more than I had already paid. The beds were absolute torture and the one I ended up choosing to sleep in was the most uncomfortable bed I've ever slept in, only slightly better than sleeping on the floor. I slept very poorly and woke up every hour or two as a result of the poor quality linens and the extremely uncomfortable bed. In the morning when I went to use the shared bathroom, it was so disgustingly dirty that I decided against a shower and used to the filthy sink to brush my teeth. I was very happy that I was able to leave after having endured the stay of one night at the Abbeyfield. The tariff was only slightly lower than other B&Bs in the area, where I've stayed previously on trips to Cambridge. This was very poor value for money. What a dreadful place to stay. I wouldn't recommend it to even the most desperate.

“Overpriced unclean Dump”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 August 2010

Keep well away. Overpriced, based on local tarrifs as the measure, unclean - the cleaners appear for a short while and do not speak english so that nobody including the owner can communicate with them. They simply do not clean and even changing towels is a case of folding already used ones. The cleanliness is something to be seen to be believed. This place displays an AA recommendation sign outside which whould be removed and they should re-evaluate. A complete revamp and change of running required.. People are not getting value for money.

“Stay well away”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 May 2010

We thought we booked a family room in a family run bed and breakfast. When we arrived, there was no family, because the owner does not live in the "Bed and Breakfast".
There seemed to be other guests, but the atmosphere was peculiar, so I asked to see the room which was clean, however the shared toilet and bathroom were revolting, the toilet had urine all over the floor and the bathroom was green with mould.
We were told that it was too late to cancel and we had to pay the full amount. He handed the key of the room, that we were to put in a box after we left , and he went home. We had another look at the place deciding if to stay or leave when someone came out of another room in his boxer shorts, holding a pillow to take a shower in the disgusting bathroom, other two or three guests came out of their rooms to sit in the so called breakfast room despite it was well past midday and there is no breakfast service here. Finally as we were leaving, the guest of the only room left arrived, he was a disabled person and when he opened his room, we realized this was his place of residence as it possibly was for the other guests.
In my opinion this is a doss house. We packed our bags and left.
