“nice hotel but old”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

I stayed there last December for business. It is a very nice hotel, with free breakfast and well-located within walking distance from the village and some interesting places. They have very friendly staff. I had to go to a meeting the day I checked-out, and they kindly accepted to keep my luggage in safe place. The room was fine except that the bathroom is too small and both look really old; well... the hotel overall is old, they should do a little improvment in the whole appearance of the hotel. The restaurant had cheap food but not very tasty. The breakfast was ok.

I am very pleased that in general the reviewer seemed to have an enjoyable experience and I am espcially glad that they found the the service so excellent as this is something we work very hard on getting as good as it can possibly be. I take the point the reviewer makes about the hotel being old, since we are located in Grade II listed Georgian building, but I can assure the reviewer and potential guests that we do have a number of rooms where we have made significant improvements and in addition we will be undertaking an extensive refurbishment in the coming months. That being said all of our rooms do conform to the AA's 2* standards currently and we always ensure the highest standards of cleanliness and this enables us to provide a very satisfactory experience to the vast majority of our guests.

“Nice location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

We went to Cardiff with my mate to explore the city and to party a little, and the hotel served the purpose quite nicely. Wasn't maybe the cheapest option, but it was in a perfect location and of pretty good quality overall. There was some rather popular jazz bar/restaurant downstairs which we found funny, wasn't exactly our style, but it's ok if you're into that kind of thing, I guess.. :P I would give it 3½ stars out of 5.

Room Tip: Might not want to consider this hotel if you're travelling with small children, the noise from t...

I am extremely sorry to read that as with a previous reviewer in December, this guest's stay was adversely affected by noise from Christmas parties in the bar. I would ask potential guests to read the previous response I posted when I explained that we have now put into place systems to ensure guests who need quiet rooms are always allocated these. The important thing from our point of view is that if guests are looking to stay with us then they should please call us directly to book so that we ensure they get the right type of room and this will then enable them to enjoy the unique friendly, relaxed atmposhere that we offer here.

“Nice hotel - but not at Christmas”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 December 2011

I have stayed at The Clifton several times recently, on business and I have been very happy - to the extent that I would have given a rating of 4 last week.

The hotel is OK - the staff are very friendly, so my rating of 2 is probably a bit harsh - read on....

Unfortunately this week (and I assume until Christmas) the hotel is hosting Christmas parties in the basement - a separate company to the hotel. Nice bar and nice food by the way ...

I was there on business and had to get up early each day.

I was given a room on the ground floor, just above the back room of bar. The first night there was an office party in the bar, which was boystrous and kept me awake until after midnight, then followed by what seemed like an orgy in the next room - very thin walls!! Hey - it is Christmas!!

Night 2 - I got to my room after dinner at about 9:30pm ready for an early start next day. No chance - this night there was a disco in the bar and the walls of my room were pounding until well after midnight - and I mean POUNDING- there is little or no sound isolation and it was very loud - I should have got dressed and gone downstairs - it would have been the same. The concierge offered me another room down the corridor, but that would have been the same noise. At least he tried.

OK - It's Christmas - and I am not a party pooper so I lived with it.

I would suggest to the hotel to consider the nature of the guest when allocating rooms at this time of year. Had I been on the top floor - I am sure the sound levels would have been fine.

I am back in Bristol again next week - I think I will stay elsewhere until after the party season

Room Tip: Normally good - but consider there may be a party in the bar - so head upwards

I am delighted to read that this reviewer normally enjoys an excellent stay at the Clifton, but I am just as disappointed that their stay in December was sullied by issues with noise from the bar. As the reviewer points out it was the party season in December and Racks Bar and Kitchen is a very popular place for Christmas parties which can sometimes involve loud music. We have recognised that this is a serious problem for our hotel guests and so we have put in to place systems to try and ensure that at this time, and when there are parties at the weekends during the rest of the year, only guests who won't be affected by the music are allocated rooms above the bar. We now offer discounted ground floor rooms for those guests and would strongly encourage guests coming on the weekend to call us directly so that if a quiet room is required we can ensure that one is allocated. As the reviewer points out, in all other areas they, and indeed the vast majority of our guests, are extremely happy with the experience they get at the Clifton and so it certainly shouldn't be a reason to be put off coming, and I sincerely hope we can welcome back the reviewer soon.

“Good location let down by dated rooms and poor restaurant experience”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 November 2011 via mobile

We stayed here with other members of our family to attend a wedding in nearby Clifton chapel.

The good points:

1. Properly secure, secure parking (which was important to us as we had a boot full of tools and furniture).
2. Friendly reception staff.
3. Convenient location, just 10 minutes walk from the heart of Clifton village.

The bad bits:

1. Rooms and particularly bathrooms were cramped and dated.
2. We slept ok (possibly due to the long day and champagne) but other family members were kept awake most of the night by noise from the street and the bar.
3. The restaurant couldn't decide if it was a restaurant or a bar. We were shown to a table and given full waiter service but then asked to hand over a credit card so we could run a tab!
4. The restaurant food was cheap but not tasty (or hot).

Overall I would not recommend this hotel. There are a lot of other hotels very close by so I am sure you could do better in Clifton.

Further to this guest's comments on their stay at the Clifton I would like to say that while I am pleased that they were satisfied with a number of key areas, I am equally very sorry that they did not enjoy a completely satisfactory experience. The quality of service that we provide is something that we do pride ourselves on and so I am very glad that this was evident during the reviewer's stay. With regards to the less positive points which they have highlighted I can assure both the reviewer and potential guests that we are working very hard to resolve these issues. We are currently in the planning stage for a full refurbishment of the hotel and are confident this will be taking place in the coming months. However we do already have a number of rooms which have been updated and if guests call us directly to book then we can ensure that they are allocated with these rooms. I have also passed on these comments to the bar manager who was very sorry to hear of the problems with the food but was keen to stress that such issues are very unusual. As far as how Racks is set up, it does describe itself as a Bar-Kitchen rather than specifically a restaurant and the intention both in the accommodation and Food & Beverage sides of the business is to provide a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. We are, however, sorry if this has led to any confusion. I note that the reviewer feels unable to recommend the hotel and would not return but I would really like to encourage them to reconsider this as I am certain that if they were to return they would have a much more satisfactory experience.
