Stayed at Downs edge at beginning of October. We had stayed there before several years ago.
Our room, the Green room, wasn't as nice as the one we had previously but still very quirky and quite comfortable. Main downside is that the lavatory is on the corridor, not in the room, although there is a shower and wash hand baisin en-suite. I seemed to remember down duvets etc. in the previous room but this wasn't the case in the Green room.
The location is lovely if you aren't fussed about being in the city centre. The downs are on the doorstep and the house has a large garden. The city centre is walkable as it's downhill and buses run up to near the house.
We loved the house, old and full of character. Could probably do with a bit of upgrading but still lovely and cosy with lots of interesting objects. The hosts were welcoming and friendly.
Breakfast was lovely both mornings. There is a large dining table where people eat communally. Lots of choices so you are asked to select in advance. wouldn't be possible to have the choice there is otherwise. Can recommend the smoked haddock and my husband enjoyed a quality English breakfast each day. Lovely homemade preserves and decent coffee.
It's not especially cheap, on a par with hotels like The Grand, a 4* in the centre, and is a b&b rather than a hotel. No bar for example. Maybe wouldn't suit young people wanting a night out in the City Centre although there are nice restaurants & pubs within easy walking distance - about 5 minutes.
Room Tip: Not sure which rooms are which but can say that the Green room isn't really en-suite as loo out...
