“A perfect weekend”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

My wife and I stayed at the Avon Gorge this last weekend as a pre Valentines stay. From the moment we arrived until the minute we left, we were treated with respect and every member of staff were extremely friendly and more then helpful. We had been upgraded (at no extra charge) to a Gorge facing room which was more than adequate for our needs. The first night we ate at the hotel and the waiting staff as well as the quality of the food was second to none it was absolutely fantastic. I would also like to say a personal thank you to David the bartender in the Bridge Cafe, a very warm and friendly individual and if you get to read this message then please thank him again from Mark and Moya. I will certainly not hesitate to recommend anyone to stay at the hotel and as for myself, I look forward to another break there maybe when the weather is a little warmer and can enjoy the terrace area a little more. Once again, a big thank you to the Avon Gorge hotel for making our weekend an extremely pleasant one and we look forward to seeing you all again soon.

“Good location”

The hotel is in a good location with excellent views of the bridge. Parking is a bit hit and miss at the front of the hotel and the parking at the back is very dark and dingy and does not feel very safe in the evening,it definitely needs a serious revamp.
We had a premier room but I think the only thing premier was the view of the gorge through very dingy dirty windows. The quilt and pillows were of the cheapest quality I have ever come across in a hotel - the mattress was not much better and as such i slept badly and had a very bad neck and headache for the next day. The bathroom was clean as was the room but the carpet was stained.
The food in the restaraunt was actually quite good as was breakfast which was at odds with the rooms , the staff were fairly helpful but we did have to wait a bit between courses even though the restaraunt was not busy.
I would not want to stay at the hotel again which is a shame but it does need a very thorough refurbishment programme.

“Premium location, great customer service, but needs a facelift”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

A feel a bit guilty giving this hotel just an average since its location, perched on the side of the Avon Gorge with some of the best views of the Clifton Suspension Bridge, coupled with the high standard of customer service, would normally get a much higher score.

The trouble is the hotel is badly in need of a facelift. Whilst the bedrooms and bathrooms were spotless, it doesn't look like there's been any decorating since the lates 70's/early 80s. We booked a room with a view of the gorge/bridge which turned out to be a family room- it was huge and could have quite happily accomodated a super-king size bed in addition to the single bed rather than the double bed. The bedding was alright but was what you'd expect in a motorway motel rather than a hotel like this; a thin duvet and cheap spongy pillows. Room lighting was poorly thought out; it was either on or off, no middle ground. The bathroom, although clean (none of the usual black mildew in sight), was very tired; not often you see green bathroom suites nowadays. Quite a few cracked tiles didn't help with the overall appearance.

A buffet breakfast, both hot & cold, was well done and couldn't be faulted. Didn't have lunch here but the menu looked good and the restaurant was busy Sunday lunchtime.

The hotel bar and restaurant has had a makeover and shows what can be done; if the same care and attention would be spent on the rooms this hotel with be one of the best in town.

I'm not sure I'd stay here again unless I got a good deal that was cheaper than hotels in the main part of town and I was using the hotel as a base. If I was looking for a romantic weekend away hotel, this wouldn't be on my list, not until the decorators are called in.

“short stay away”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

We booked a one night stay here just to get away and were not disappointed. The staff were very nice, helpful and welcoming. We booked a gorge view room 128, the view was fantastic, the room was large and had all you need including a hairdryer in the bathroom. We had read the Hotel was looking tired around the edges, and in our room the carpet was a little worn in some places, but that was the only thing. It was clean and tidy spacious and had stunning views. Breakfast was amazing perfect for the start of the day, fresh juice hot coffee, pastries, toast, full english cooked to order, piping hot and plenty of it. and if you needed more cereal was on offer too. We will book again and stay longer, perfect for a weekend looking around clifton village

Room Tip: Spend the extra and book a gorge view.

“Perfect New Year's Eve”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

My husband and I stayed at the Avon Gorge for the New Year celebrations and we had a superb time! We took advantage of the package and upgraded for very little extra to a Gorge view - well worth doing! Yes, the decor may be a little old fashioned but we could not fault the size, comfort and cleanliness of our room. From the moment we booked to the end of our stay, we were most impressed with the high quality of service. Nothing was too much for them at the hotel, restaurant and pub and all with a smile. Many 5 star hotels could learn a thing or two from all staff at the Avon Gorge. I want to mention Tessa Holmes, the event coordinator, and thank her for all her help.
The Bridge Cafe was discreetly decorated and the food on the night was excellent. We had a great view of the bridge from our window table.
As for the party, it was great fun with a nice mix of ages and music and again great staff. At midnight the fireworks were brilliant and never seemed to end! Another impressive touch! And a glass of bubbly for all guests as well as food later on.
It was good to chill at the hotel for another day and night after that and enjoy Clfton Village and the beautiful area.
We had enjoyed drinks and food at the White Lion before on the terrace in summer and a meal or two at the Bridge Cafe before but we will certainly return for a relaxed weekend at the hotel again after this experience.
