“weekend with friends”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

We chose Bristol having been before many years ago and enjoyed the shopping and waterside bars.Winter break package was good value and hotel reception kindly moved my location as original room was a bit dingy and very noisy with air conditioning just outside window. We got an upgrade which i would have been happy to pay for but no charge. The bar was in basement and not my scene the restaurant was fine with limited choice on package

“Beautiful building”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

The building is stunning with a great location and a really sweet basement bar. We booked through the thistle website and paid about £63 per night for two nights, which was about right for our room (clean, small and comfortable with a slightly dated bathroom - good overall) Unfortunately on both nights we were there the hotel had functions on in the ballroom which we could really hear, something that was made worse on the second morning by the incredibly loud room service being delivered to rooms near us and the lack of black out blinds in the room meaning we were up with dawn. Our friends who stayed in another part of the hotel did not have these problems with noise so it's clearly not the whole hotel. We are planning to stay at the hotel again next time we visit Bristol.

Room Tip: Rooms 140 - 160ish are on top of the main function room

“Noisey night”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

person found this review helpful

Centrally located in a nice part of the town. Parking was included int he price which is unusual for central Bristol. Staff all very friendly and happy. The room was well appointed although you had to pay for wifi. Bed was wide at 6 foot. Breakfast was in a nice setting and the food quality was OK, however, the range of food available was good. The gym and pool were a little below average, but they covered everything (dumb bells up to 42Kg and a few of the standard aerobic and anerobic machines) I needed. They are both just a bit narrow.

From what I've described aboave you'd think that's worth 3.5/4 stars. And you'd be right. The problem was they had a function on and when some of the people left at 2:30am, the noise they made in the street was very loud, singing, hanging round and generally being drunk. This was followed by the sound of workers packing away equipment until 5am. Probably the worst night I've had in a hotel.

As I sit here feeling very tired and lacking energy to go out training tonight, I could very easily give this hotel a 1 star. I'm not saying the hotel is going to be like this every night, but if you stay, ask for a room at the back (I'd asked for a quiet room when I booked).

£77 per night.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back, definetly not one at the front if you want a quiet room.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to feedback your comments following your stay with us.

I would like to apologise for the noise that you experienced from a function held at the hotel during your stay. We try to encourage guests to keep noise to a minimum, however when they get out of the hotel we obviously have very little control. It is our policy for equipment not to be broken down until 7am in the morning, so this will certainly be investigated as to why this happened.

We appreciate your kind comments regarding the staff being friendly and happy.

We hope to welcome you back to The Grand Hotel in the future.

With kind regards

“Location Great Rooms Good Service Poor”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

This is a nice hotel situated in the centre of Bristol. Whilst it ahs little views it is right in the centre of the action. Rooms are a very good standard very cleanand well appointed. The TV in my bedroom was enormous. Food was good value and well prepared exactly what you would expect from a traditional hotel of this standard. The only drawback is the staff. They just seem to be going through the motions. From Check-in wher absolutely no information on wher to go or waht to do in the hotel to reception staff who gave no information on the Car Park to the personnel who said there was no way they could fix the reception on my televisionto the operator who could not provide me with an extra towel...we only had one large one in the room. A genuine service disaster! Shame left a bad taste in the mouth

Room Tip: Market on a Saturday within 100 metres is great fun

“excellent location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

the hotel itself is very nice in an excellent location.the bed was the most comfy i have slept on tho the room was a tad small. however it was a good quality clean room with an excellent bathroom with a very good shower.being an old building tho you do get a constant noise of running water from the pipes when showers or toilet flushing in other rooms.also walls are not very sound proof and could hear talking in next room and corridor butit wasnt a problem. the parking is a bit tight and the lift was very worrying . after a few scary moments in the lift we used the stairs.
its right in the centre of bristol and the main shopping area is about 3 mins walk away. there is also a large market outside most days. my only main gripe is the phone number is an 0871 number with no alternative land based number.
