“Fine for business, but not for luxury!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 November 2011

Hotel is attached to a Starbucks, tried to pick the key up from the machine which was broken. After 15 mins I managed to get a key from one of the members of staff in the coffee shop. The rooms are adequate for professional, but not for leisure travellers. Room I was allocated was on the bottom floor and was very dark and overlooked by a car park. Would stay again for work only.

“Don't let 'Lodge' put you off”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2011

This is definitely not a 'Travel Lodge', accomodation is far superior, immaculate and very clean, with evertything the business traveller will need. This was my second visit and I will stay here whenever I am in Bristol.

Whilst the pub next door has a decent menu, it is very limited, but Aztec across the road is a full service hotel and you can dine there if you prefer.

They operate a self service automted check in which is unusual, so there is no staff interaction (hence no 'service' rating on this review).

The only complaints are:

Is £3 parking really necessary?
You need to email Shire to get a VAT receipt emailed to you as the check in only issues a card voucher.

“Not what you paid for”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 October 2011

This room cost £115 for one night - without breakfast, so I assumed the room and the service would be worth the price, but they weren't really. Check-in is in a Starbucks cafe next door (very odd). The guy on reception was less welcoming than staff at Starbucks are usually, so far from the helpful welcome you expect at a hotel reception. The room was lovely and clean. However of the 16 TV channels 5 were not working (including Sky News - there was no BBC News channel. Much wanted by the business traveller). I called reception about this and they said some-one would come up. 30mins later no-one had come. I called again and 10mins later two guys arrived, wrote down the 5 missing channels and left "to check the box". One and a half hours later when I checked out they had not returned or called me. I've had better service for half the price at Premier Inn. A real shame.

“Smart, compact modern hotel in a convenient location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 October 2011

I booked this hotel because of location and because I'd had a good experience with the Shire hotel group before. As I was on business and going out for dinner with friends in the evening, I didn't need any particular frills other than wireless internet, which the hotel provided for free.
The ground floor room was quite compact, but spotlessly clean and very modern. There was a double bed and a comfy armchair and footstool. The room was decorated in neutral basics with bright contrasting cushions which I thought was cool but traditionalists might find a little on the garish side.

The bathroom was also spotlessly clean, with good quality toiletries in a dispenser. There was no bathtub, but a large shower cubicle with a good strong shower.

Check-in was simple, and although I was expecting a machine, there was a friendly young man assisting, who actually spotted me in the car park and directed me to the Starbucks/Bar area where the check-in took place. Breakfast was not included in the room rate but with a Starbucks right there, I didn't have to go far, had I wanted it.

The bed was very comfortable and I should have gotten a good night's sleep. However there was a large party staying in the hotel across several rooms with several small children. This meant that late at night and first thing in the morning (before 7am!) I was disturbed by the sound of kids crying and running up and down the hotel corridors, and knocking on doors around me. This isn't the hotel's fault, although if the party were located in a group of rooms together, it could have lessened the noise and to-ing & fro-ing. The other thing was that when the people above me had a shower, I could hear the water running clearly. Needless to say I was a little grumpy in the morning on check-out.

All in all I would stay again (despite the noise- as I said it wasn't the hotel's fault) although I would try to request a higher floor next time- as a woman travelling alone I would have felt safer off the ground floor.

Good things:
Reasonable room rate- I paid £59 inc VAT
Free Wifi
Free parking (although I think they charge on weekdays)
Easy access, just off the M5/M4 junction.
Quiet surroundings
Starbucks and bistro on site
Close to Cribbs Causeway shopping centre

Not-so-good things:
Small room
Noise from other rooms, especially shower
Some might not like decor
Some might not like lack of bathtub

“Excellent and Good value for Money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2011

We booked the hotel on line without any previous experience.

Given the price we were very surprised by the quality of room, furnishing and cleanliness. It was much superior to others who charge 50% more would provide!!

It is apity there is more of these hotels in British Towns!
