I booked this hotel because of location and because I'd had a good experience with the Shire hotel group before. As I was on business and going out for dinner with friends in the evening, I didn't need any particular frills other than wireless internet, which the hotel provided for free.
The ground floor room was quite compact, but spotlessly clean and very modern. There was a double bed and a comfy armchair and footstool. The room was decorated in neutral basics with bright contrasting cushions which I thought was cool but traditionalists might find a little on the garish side.
The bathroom was also spotlessly clean, with good quality toiletries in a dispenser. There was no bathtub, but a large shower cubicle with a good strong shower.
Check-in was simple, and although I was expecting a machine, there was a friendly young man assisting, who actually spotted me in the car park and directed me to the Starbucks/Bar area where the check-in took place. Breakfast was not included in the room rate but with a Starbucks right there, I didn't have to go far, had I wanted it.
The bed was very comfortable and I should have gotten a good night's sleep. However there was a large party staying in the hotel across several rooms with several small children. This meant that late at night and first thing in the morning (before 7am!) I was disturbed by the sound of kids crying and running up and down the hotel corridors, and knocking on doors around me. This isn't the hotel's fault, although if the party were located in a group of rooms together, it could have lessened the noise and to-ing & fro-ing. The other thing was that when the people above me had a shower, I could hear the water running clearly. Needless to say I was a little grumpy in the morning on check-out.
All in all I would stay again (despite the noise- as I said it wasn't the hotel's fault) although I would try to request a higher floor next time- as a woman travelling alone I would have felt safer off the ground floor.
Good things:
Reasonable room rate- I paid £59 inc VAT
Free Wifi
Free parking (although I think they charge on weekdays)
Easy access, just off the M5/M4 junction.
Quiet surroundings
Starbucks and bistro on site
Close to Cribbs Causeway shopping centre
Not-so-good things:
Small room
Noise from other rooms, especially shower
Some might not like decor
Some might not like lack of bathtub
