“Good stay, but!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 December 2011

A very friendly reception and help to our room with the bags. They took notice of my request for a convenient room due to arthritis. No lift but the gave us a good room. Very comfortable with any thing you could wish for 'though the bathrooms are very small. The bar is cosy and the staff friendly and helpful. The food is also very good. The one let down is NO COOKED BREAKFAST only a buffet. Unless you pay extra. A big thing on our holiday is a cooked breakfast and we look forward to it. A hotel of this class should always include one and all the others do. Why cut corners?
This is the only serious fault we could find but will not be going again 'till they put it right.

Room Tip: I think all you need to do is ask. That is all I did.

“Great Country Hotel & Restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2011

We have stayed here as well as having had a number of lunches and evening meals. When staying we did so over a weekend with breakfast and evening meal included. Not inexpensive but worth the money. Rooms full of character. Pre dinner drinks in the cosy bar area followed by excellent meals. Service by management and staff as expected. The lunches we have enjoyed with friends and no-one has been disappointed. If you don't know the area this is a great place to stay with lots to do in the heart of Derbyshire, not least a visit to Chatsworth just over a mile or so away. Not cheap but great country break.

“Very enjoyable stay”

Attractive building - it is on the main road but this did not bother us as we were out and about during the daytime.
Our room was excellent - comfy large bed.
We had a bar meal on the first night and then restaurant the second night. Both were very good rather than outstanding but this is probably because our expectations were very high.
A small niggle but when paying £240 per night it irks to pay for a cooked breakfast........
Staff were very friendly and helpful.
The hotel suggests a daily walk which we did and was great - a nice touch.
Overall we enjoyed our stay.

“Lived up to reputation and expectation”

We had a warm welcome from front of house who were expecting us to join friends staying at the hotel. Pre-dinner cocktails were taken in a cosy corner of the bar. As nominated driver I couldn’t have anything alcoholic, and was pleased to have plenty of interesting choice. Helpful information is provided on the menu and there is plenty of time to choose what you would like to eat.
The staff showed care when escorting us to the dining room, discretely pointing out where the floor is uneven. This helped my husband who has difficulty walking. If you don’t like full on formal dining then skip this place, but I love all of the attention to details and fancy extras like amuse-bouche.
I can’t remember what the other guests had but my starter of wild salmon, fig, smoked yoghurt sorbet, liquorice, pink grapefruit dressing was a taste sensation. Main courses were generous in portion, exquisite in flavour and aroma and a work of art on the plate. Asking playfully for a ‘doggy bag’ went down like a lead balloon, however service was entirely professional and appropriate for the setting. Three of the party went for desserts, one even braving the ‘Assiette’ which was an amazing four or five desserts on one plate and would have easily fed two or more people. The staff were happy to provide extra spoons for anyone who wanted to share.
Coffee and home made petit fours were taken in the low comfortable seats in the lounge finishing off a perfect evening.
In terms of price, it is treat to eat here, and I believe that to stay overnight even more so, but the setting, service and quality is worth the occasional splurge.

“Brilliant - we're local & this one gets the locals vote!”

Had another excellent family get together at The Peacock, a group of 25+ family members ranging from 0 to 90. The food was superb and excellent value for money - the locally reared lamb for sunday lunch is a must have! The staff are warm, professional and engaging with a 'here to help' attitude. The hotel is authentic, not pretencious, roaring fires and great food (not to mention the beers)...we'll definately go back.
