“Great fishing right on Deer Creek”

This campground is pretty basic, and is NOT a good place for tent campers. The sites are tiny, so you will want to go to Potato Patch campground if you are tent camping. The sites are right on the creek, for the most part, so if you have smaller children, this can be a bit hazardous. We camped in the spring, when there was a pretty good flow of water in the creek from snowmelt. I wouldn't recommend this site if you have small children, but it's wonderful for older kids who enjoy fishing.

“Relaxing weekend trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 June 2008

My wife and I took our 9 month old camping this summer to Elam campground right off Highway 32. This is a great little campground maintained by the National Forrest Service. It is a fairly undeveloped campground. Facilities only include garbage dumpsters, pit toilets and a hand pump for water, but the campground is paved, so it is not diffucult getting around. It is a very beautiful setting, just off the Highway, but right along Deer Creek. This section of Deer Creek is stocked by Fish and Game, so the fishing is good. Some people were catching their limit of trout in 10 minutes. Because of the beautiful setting and great fishing, this camp fills up quickly on the weekends. There are only about 14 sites, and a few of them were closed due to damage. We arrived on the Friday after Memorial Day and were lucky enough to get a good site. I would recommend arriving in the afternoon. Camping fees were $14 per site per night, which is a deal in my opinion, as compared to $40 in Yosemitte. You will want to bring your own firewood, since there is no ranger station to purchase it. You also could drive into Chester, which is not far from the camp. For my family, it was an excellent place for a weekend trip - no cell phones, computers, etc. However, it may not be suitable for longer trips unless you are just wanting to relax. We used this trip as a trial run to figure out what we needed for our longer camping trip coming up this summer. Also, I would bring along a few rolls of toilete paper. It is provided at the campground, but it is a real pain to unwind, and since the bathrooms have no lights in them, it can get tricky trying to use the facilities at night. Just a hint. Email me with any questions. I've included a few pics of our site. It was the second to last one at the end of the campground.
