If you're looking for comfortable lodging that's not overgentrified and something of a trip back in time, this is your place.
We stayed for two nights with our young children. The innkeeper was very accommodating as she made our reservation, followed up promptly with a confirmation email, and had everything in good order.
Our room was spacious, light-filled, and pleasant. The bathroom is old but functioned perfectly well and was clean. The sheets are high-quality, line-dried, and ironed in an old mangle with lavendar spray--lovely.
Breakfast was basic, good coffee/tea and muffins with butter and jam. Nothing to write home about, but much better than most continental breakfasts. We knew it wouldn't be a heavy/cooked breakfast and planned accordingly for our other meals. I did notice on our second day that there wasn't quite enough room for all the guests to sit down at once in the dining area.
We made use of the outdoor grill and eating area so that we didn't have to eat in restaurants all the time, and we really appreciated that.
The common areas actually get used here. The decor is not great (very 1980s) and the pink wall-to-wall carpet is due for replacement, but the comfy furniture, blazing fire, and useful books meant that we and the other guests actually hung out in the common areas instead of hiding in our rooms. I've stayed in too many places that had beautifully decorated living rooms that were too pretty to sit in.
We enjoyed chatting with the innkeeper as she ran sheets through the mangle. She was pleasant and helpful. She's worked there over 40 years, since she was in her teens. It's lovely to have a few of these old family-run places still in business.
The best thing about this place? The other guests. We met great people, shared hiking and other stories, and parted feeling as though we'd stayed at the home of an old friend. We'll be back.
