My husband and I accidentally stumbled upon the Northland Lodge on our recent trip to Waterton Lakes National Park. Normally we rarely make reservations anywhere because we like to be flexible and go where the wind blows us. In this case, our gypsy ways threatened to ruin our trip because we just happened to arrive in Waterton Village on the day before Canada Day and were told by just about everyone that we didn't have a hope in hell of finding accomodations within a forty mile radius. But through a series of helpful tips and sheer dumb luck, we eventually hunted down the last room available at the Northland Lodge, which in our mind, turned out to be the best room.
A visit to the Northland Lodge is like a visit to a much beloved grandmother, with all of its homey comforts, including fresh baked muffins. We were warmly welcomed, not only by a very gracious proprietor named Jean, but also by a very friendly tortoise shell kitty named Kissie which made us feel doubly at home. Our room was comfortable, clean and quiet with a private bath. And where else can you get ironed sheets scented with lavender? We quickly fell asleep to the soothing sounds of nearby Bertha Falls. The Lodge itself is set up on a hill with a wide veranda on all sides where one can relax and enjoy a view of the mountains. It has a rich history, which Jean loves to share with her guests.
If you don't like elegant old Victorian houses with eclectic furniture or cats, the Northland Lodge probably isn't your cup of tea, but we loved it and would definitely go back there in a heartbeat. My only regret is that I didn't eat more muffins!
