“Good for an overnight stay after taking the ferry”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 August 2011

We stayed at the Port Hardy Inn for one night after arriving from the ferry from Prince Rupert. The hotel was decent - clean and quiet and quick 10 minute drive from the ferry terminal. Our room faced the parking lot but it was very quiet. The front desk was friendly. Only recommendation is to have some sort of continental breakfast included or at least complimentary bottled water.

“OK for an overnight stay-and not much choice!”

Stayed en route to Prince Rupert by ferry with a tour group. We were not expecting great things of this hotel, so were not disappointed. The room was OK- clean and comfortable enough. The restaurant was good- it was suggested it had changed hands lately. The manager doesn't seem to like his job much- not what you'd call a "people person". Port Hardy itself barely exists, but it had a nice authentic feel about it, and lovely views at the jetty, with eagles overhead. A number of buildings near the jetty seemed derelict, which gave a poor impression. Overall, we couldn't understand why Port Hardy, and the hotel, didn't make more effort to hold on to its captive population of tourists heading along the Inside Passage. The question of recommendation doesn't really apply- the ferry to Price Rupert leaves early and arrives back late, so you need an overnight stop, and there isn't really much else on offer.

“Better than Expected”

We expected the worst after reading other reviews. We paid for this hotel as part of a tour, so we cannot comment on cost.
It has large, comfortable and clean rooms. Perfectly acceptable for an overnight stop.
We left before breakfast so we can't comment on that.
The location is reasonable, about a 15 minute walk into the small town.
We and several other members of our group ate at the Sporty Bar. It provided "Pub Grub" and drinks at very reasonable rates.

“Way overpriced, catatonic service”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 August 2009

Certainly in the top few worst hotels I've stayed at. I heard from others to avoid it but had no choice as it was literally the only room available in Port Hardy. We were met in the lobby with a fellow who booked us in but didn't feel it necessary to look up or respond (when directly asked something) with a derisive grunt. We were treated to an ancient room with a stained and sagging ceiling. The bed was so humped in the middle that our hiking partner (I'm not making this up) tumbled off the bed in the middle of the night and smacked his head on the nightstand. We were serenaded by quarreling drunks outside the pub most of the night and with no a/c, had to keep the windows open. All this for the low low price of $125 per night.

“Overpriced, rude, smells like fried food”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 June 2008

We ended up here because there was literally no other place with a room available, even though it was off-season. This is one of the dumpiest places that I have ever stayed, and it was outrageously expensive as well.

There is a fried food buffet of some sort located within the hotel, where huge tour groups of senior citizens are eating. The entire place smells like fried fish, even our room on the 2nd floor.

The hallways, stairways, lobby, rooms, and tub/showers were not very well cleaned or cared for. Windows face a parking lot and busy road.

We were charged nearly $20 for a local phone call (checking other hotels again for the zilliionth time), which dropped in the middle of the call and we had to redial. So, it was charged twice. We inquired at the front desk during check out (their printout of the calls showed them less than 60 seconds apart to the same number, each duration of the call being less than 5 minutes but still nearly a $10 fee x 2). After being treated very rudely by the front desk person when asking to have one of the fees removed, we requested to speak to the manager. In a room to our right, a light was turned out. The manager was hiding in his office- in the dark- refusing to speak with us. We had to wait in the lobby more than 20 minutes before he came out and quite rudely told us that he didn't want to help us, talk to us, or hear any complaints or questions. He then promptly went back in his office.

Also, the reason we could not use our cell phone for the calls was that the wall outlet in our room broke off the prongs of the charger and the phone was dead, and they do not sell Verizon-compatible chargers anywhere on Vancouver Island.

  • Liked — Nothing, including the lack of running water in our bathroom sink which management refused to address.
  • Disliked — Rat-hole of a place, with disgruntled staff and permeating fried fish smell to prove it, all at a premium price.
