“comfortable if you have to catch the ferry”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2006

Like most others, the only reason we stayed at the Pioneer Inn was to catch the ferry to Prince Rupert. That said, there is no reason not to stay in this hotel as it is the closest you can get to the ferry (and that's important at 04.30 in the morning!) and there is quite a nice nature reserve directly outside the hotel as well as on the road to the ferry.
The new manager is indeed everywhere and very helpful. Drawback for us was that the restaurant was closed for renovations (due to open again in August 06), but the manager (and his wife behind the reception) were doing their best. They suggested we order a pizza instead, which did arrive within 45 minutes and was actually quite nice outside on the big lawn.
we did visit the village of Port Hardy itself, about a 15 minute drive away, but there is nothing that should keep you in the village rather than stay in this quite nice hotel in the woods towards the ferry. Moral of the story, arrive in late afternoon, have a decent meal (or pizza) get some sleep (rooms were clean and quite large with kitchennette and good shower) and leave early for the ferry. If that's your itinerary you will not be disappointed by the Pioneer Inn.

“New Management is Great!”

I stayed there a couple years back and it was filthy, but I went back because the location is great. When I went in it was clean and the food is delicious. The staff isn't great at english but very pleasant and friendly. The new manager seems to be taking charge and doing a lot of renovations. It's definitely clean and worth the stay especially for the location and price.

“Do not stay here!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 December 2005

Stayed here in July 2005 as it said it was the nearest hotel to the ferry terminal (if you are catching the Inside Passage ferry to Prince Rupert and beyond). Was about a 10/15 minute drive so somewhere else may have been closer. Basically it was absolutely filthy. We walked round trying not to touch anything and even put our shoes on the spare bed as we didn't want them on the floor. The bathroom was absolutely revolting. We are not overly fussy people - dated, old fashioned, small is ok but there is no excuse for dirt. Restaurant on site was ok but took ages for the meal to arrive. Stay at the Quarterdeck instead and if that is full - sleep in the back of your car at the ferry terminal. Believe me, that would be more comfortable than a night at the Pioneer ....

“Stay away from the Pioneer Inn”

Stay away!

One big nightmare. Open the room means to awake the rodents and seeing them running through the room. the room was dirty, the fridge didn't smell, but stink after rotten fish, staff was rude and impolite.

Moved to another hotel.
