“Friendly and efficient service, excellent food and very comfortable rooms.”

The staff are welcoming, pleasant, friendly and attentive. The rooms are warm, comfortable and tastefully decorated and furnished. The facilities included a large modern LCD television, full range of tea and coffee making provisions. Our room had a small settee and armchair as well as a writing desk and chair.

The dinner we had in the restaurant was excellent. The menu was extensive and imaginative and the food, which was freshly cooked, was well presented with generous portions of vegetables on offer and all of excellent quality. The service was prompt and attentive. The tables were beautifully set and all with fresh flowers.

The breakfast served in the restaurant included a buffet table, offering cereals, fruit juices, fresh fruit, croissants and Danish pastries. We have stayed at a number of hotels recently and this one stands head and shoulders above the others in that the breakfast was freshly cooked to order, rather than just left standing in a "heated" buffet cabinet.

Apart from the restaurant this hotel offers bar meals in a comfortable bar with an open fire. A carvery is also an option. In all cases the food is freshly cooked and of excellent quality.

Generally, this hotel is in an ideal spot for anyone wishing to explore the beauty of Debyshire and its surroundings. All in all it provides exceptional value.

“Relaxed, friendly, comfortable, with wonderful food - a perfect break.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2011

We have just spent our third Christmas break at this venue and cannot fault the comfort, food, and friendly staff - plus the whole package from Christmas Eve to 27th Dec. is terrific value. Relaxed atmosphere but plenty of chances to dress up, with live music and a Dinner Dance on Boxing night. Don't understand the comments by some visitors about the rooms - ours, number 19, was clean, comfy and spacious with every facility.
We'll be back!

“Great food and service - bedrooms not so great”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2010

Just returned from a weekend break at the Boar's Head.

The weekend consisted of 2 nights stay, 2 breakfasts and 2 evening meals.

This was our second visit and we found the service very good and the food excellent.
The hotel had a couple of 'do's' on over the weekend but this in no way affected our stay.
The only negative, as commented on several times by other reviewers, were the bedrooms which were 'tired' and bathroom which was in need of a refurbishment - definately 2*. (Drinks in the main bar were expensive.)

Set in great countryside I would recommend and stay again for a relaxing weekend.

Any queries please drop me a line.

Kurt.

“A disappointing meal and a very uncomfortable night.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 August 2010

A much looked forward to family gathering was spoilt by very poorly cooked and presented food that evening and a most uncomfortable night's stay.
We were asked to have our pre dinner drinks in the residents' bar but there was no one to serve us for a considerable time. The meal itself was dreadful....I hope it was just a bad day for the chef because I really can't believe that we were eating in the same place as previous reviewers of this restaurant.
Our bedroom was large but with dated furnishings, a stained table and damaged bedside table. There was considerable noise from people walking around in the room above us and it was impossible to ignore the noise of the traffic from the busy, fast road nearby.
It was one of the worst mattresses that I have ever slept on. it was sagging in the middle and noisy each time either of us moved. Looking at earlier reviews, it seems that this was highlighted with the Hotel staff a long time ago but clearly no action taken. Other members of our group had similar experience of discomfort and we would suggest that the management replace these cheap/? old mattresses without delay. I can find little to recommend a stay here.

“Hidden Gem for family meals”

I have stayed at this hotel several times now as it is a firm favourite with my grandparents. The hotel itself is nothing to write home about, the rooms and bathrooms are basic and perhaps a little on the chintzy side. However the restaurant is amazing. There is a wide array of exquisite dishes, perfectly cooked and delivered with some of the best service i ahev ever experienced.

I also made use of the beauty spa where i had a lovely back and neck massage. The beauty spa is small, but functional.
