“Worst Hotel Ever....”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 June 2011

I sort of knew what I was getting into going in, having read the reviews of this place here and on other websites. Friend and I were going to a wedding nearby, and waited till the last minute to book a room. By this point, there were no rooms available except for here. It looks both inside, and out, like a cross between and prison and a reform school dormatory. Got a room on the second level facing the marina. The entire place has a mouldy / ashtray-like smell. The carpets in the room are of the industrial grade variety, and are installed in 12inch squares. Many of them are cigarette and brown-liquid stained. The television was from 1984 (I checked the back), had only 13 channels but at least it had a "converter" set up to it. The beds had torn linen, a vile bedspread and pillow-case combination, and no skirt on the bed which left whatever crap was underneath to be open to view. The bathroom was a mess, torn wallpaper and black grout around the tub. Needless to say, I never got in. The staff seem to spend most of their time sitting at the front entrance smoking, which is always nice. Fortunately we were very inebriated when we returned from the wedding, otherwise I fear I would have had trouble falling asleep. The sheets and surrounding area seemed to be free of any pests and since I doubt many people stay here, bed bugs weren't an issue. Without a doubt, the worst hotel / motel I have ever stayed in in my life.

“I would rather sleep on the picnic bench out front.”

Everthing smells like a big ashtray. Stains everywhere, there are what looks to be swatted flies on the wall. Just a big hodgepodge of nasty.

Room Tip: Sleep outside

“Loud, Smelly, Old, Rundown - at least clean”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 September 2009

Driving in to the parking lot my boyfriend asked me if we had lost our minds. The place is old rundown and has empty coffe cans full of cigarette butts everywhere! The carpets are stained and worn. The whole room smelled like a stale ashtray. The furniture is broken, worn out and completely ugly. Even the toilet was worn right down to the wood under the paint and the bathroom counter has areas of it worn right through to the backing behind the laminate. The sheets were so thin I was afraid we would tear them and the pillows so flat it was like having none. The air conditioner was unbareably loud and it's a joke to suggest we had a waterfront view as the only view we had was of the fence around the patio to the bar.
However there were 2 good things - it was very clean and the women working there were very nice and friendly.
I would not only not recommend this place to anyone I would strongly warn them against it.

“Two tips for Tip of the Bay”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 August 2008
2

Tip 1 : Take a tent and sleeping bags with you.

Tip 2 : Don't stay here. Just don't.

We were part of a large group booked in here for a wedding which , fortunately , was being held at another location in Picton.
Some reservations which had been made months before were not showing at the hotel on arrival , in spite of having confirmed reservations complete with confirmation numbers. In one case we found that the same reservation number had been given to two separate parties. I don't believe that this was an overbooking situation , but an incompetence thing.

The place isn't just tired , it's awful. Concrete block walls with dried swatted flies (or something) on them , ridiculously stained carpets and a smell that says a lot. And that's just the hallway. The rooms are worse. Rooms have all of the above , plus the added features of lumpy, sagging mattresses, an air conditioner that will keep you awake at night, a hot water system that runs out of hot water by about 7:30 and if you do get a shower, your hair dryer will put the power out in the rest of the place.

I have no idea why this is a non-smoking hotel. The smell of tobacco would be an inprovement and if it's fire they're worried about , well , that would be an improvement too , as long as nobody was hurt. Actually one of the staff told us that the hotel was going to be torn down so condos could be built. Makes sense , as the location is good. It can't happen too soon.

Meanwhile , do yourselves a favor - stay anywhere else.

Anywhere.

“Don't expect much from the room but the price is right & the Funky Carp is great”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 July 2008

When we first arrived the kids and my husband nearly flipped as it doesn't look like much. Upon entering the room we were even more disappointed as the carpets were stained and ripped and the decor was very outdated.

The bed linens were old and even ripped in places.

When my daughter tried to open a drawer on the dresser the handle came off in her hand!

However the price was fairly low - $121 for 4 of us.

After we had some laughs about the room and showered we all felt better. The staff provided us with extra towels no problem and the shower had good pressure to wash away all the Sand from the Sandbanks.

We went to the Funky Carp that night & had a great time. The food was good and the atmosphere fun. There was a nice view of the Bay and being beside the Marina was great.

We all actually slept well even with the loud air conditioner and lumpy bed. (spending the day at the Sandbanks in the sun helped)

So my over-all review is don't expect much from the room. It served the purpose but check out the Funky Carp and enjoy the view!
