“We enjoyed our overnight stay at The Raven Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2011

On the way from the Fairbanks to the Alaska ferry in Haines we needed a place to stay and without reservations were able to get a room at The Raven. We were hoping for a nice meal. Unfortunately, the restaurant could not accommodate our late and unexpected arrival. We were very pleased with our room which was a nice size, clean, had plenty of hot water, comfortable beds, good internet connection. There was also TV set which we did not turn on so can't say anything about availability of channels. In the morning a breakfast consist of juice, muffin, apple or orange and tea or coffee. No hot chocolate but I got a hot water to use with my own hot chocolate mix.

“A gem of a place to eat and sleep!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 September 2011

On September 7, 2011 I stayed at the Raven Hotel for the first time in about five years and the first since it has been operating under new management. I found it as wonderful as ever. My wife and I have traveled to the Yukon on other occasions with the Raven as a prime attraction.
It is a bit misleading for this establishment to be listed as a hotel rather than a restaurant. While I have found the motel to be superior to most others in the Yukon Territory, the real draw to the Raven is the food. The hotel and restaurant apparently cater to European visitors who fly into Whitehorse to visit the Kluane Park and the cusine far exceeds anything you are likely to find in the Yukon--or anywhere else for that matter. It is unexpected and incongruous to find gourmet dining in a small community on the edge of wildness like Haines Junction, but the dining is absolutely wonderful, not cheap, but wonderful and well worth it. One of the other reviewers mentioned the problem of not being to eat because they were booked. This is indeed often a problem and you may well not be able to show up in the evening and get in. But it's well worth the effort to time your travel in such a way to allow you to enjoy what the Raven has to offer.

Room Tip: Rooms on the south side are further from the lobby and may be quieter. There was little traffic on t...

The room in and of itself was one of the best we experience on a month long tour of Alaska and Canada. This is by far the 'top of the line' in Haines Junction. Chef Bongo from the Congo has a peanut and sweet potato soup that is to die for. make sure it is on the menu. The specialty during our stay was wild game. Both dishes were superb. One wonders about a 5 star in the middle of nowhere. The Raven is an oasis in nowhere.

“nice hotel but eat somewhere else”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2011

The hotel is very clean and the room is large. The fun in the room is that every where there are small sign boards haning what to do and better what not to do. The only disadvantage is that they make a lot of comercial for there restaurant but when you want to reserved for the evening you get to hear that they are totally booked out. So better try your luck by the Alcan Motor inn which has a new owner and ab very good cooker. The breakfast in the morning is simple but very good.

“Didn't Love It as Much as Others”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2011

We stayed at The Raven based on reviews I had read on Tripadvisor. I was expecting a great experience, but I was underwhelmed. The room was a higher price than any other motel in town, but for me it didn't deliver.

The room was clean and in good condition, but pretty sparse. The TV was a 19 inch tube type. There was no refrigerator or any sort of soft chair. The desk didn't have an empty outlet for a computer and was pretty small. In my opinion, the mattress and box springs are due for replacement.

There was no ice machine, so you had to ask at the desk for ice and we got a quart sized bucket. The desk closes at 10:00 PM, so after that, you're kind of on your own. The woman at the front desk forgot to mention the secret code for wireless, so I almost went without as I discovered the need for a password very close to 10:00 PM. The wireless worked fine, but it was pretty slow.

The breakfast was relatively sparse. Just juice, coffee, muffins and "fruit".

I'm not saying this is not a terrible motel, but for the money, I expect a better appointed room and staff availability until at least a little later than 10:00. I realize it's an outpost town, but for $145, the room should be better.

Thank you for your reviews and comments. We are sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with us. We have made some changes and have taken some items you mentioned under consideration and are planning changes. We have purchased new 32" Sony flat screen TVs for all of our rooms and are in the process of changing/modernizing our bedding. As for the "comfort and quality" of the mattresses, we find this to be an item that is all in personal preference as we have a lot of clients saying it was their best sleep every and that the beds are very comfortable. We also plan to slowly (as we can afford) incorporate small refrigerators in the rooms as well. As for the 10pm closure of the front desk - we used to be open later, but found that no one ever called or needed the front desk past 10pm. The hotel phone also rings at are home so we are available past the 10pm closure and we note this in the rooms for our guests so that they know how to reach us if necessary. We thank you again for your comments and hope that if you are every visiting Haines Junction again, you will consider staying with us.
