“Stunning Country House”

A very good friend and I needed to get away for a weekend, and decided to go up Snowdon in Wales. After a great deal of searching on the web, we discovered Tan y Foel, roughly 30 minutes' drive from the bottom of Snowdon. A call to Janet established that we could indeed stay for just the Saturday evening (we stayed in Caerphilly on the Friday evening) and we booked it. All I can say is that our expectations were comfortably exceeded. The food was absolutely sublime (must be pre-booked: at £48 per head it's not cheap but worth every penny) and the atmosphere relaxed and comfortable. After dinner we sat in the guest lounge - Peter brought us coffee and we soaked up the atmosphere. I went out and stood gazing at the stars while my partner relaxed in the bath. And then to sleep in a comfortable bed. Upon waking the next morning the view was incredible - a review cannot do justice - try it, you won't regret it.

“Excellent in every way!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 October 2010

It's hard not to ramble on for hours about Tan-y-Foel. Your first impression is the fantastic views in all directions which only get better from your bedroom window. The hosts Peter & Jan could not have been friendlier and we enjoyed chatting with them. Food was amazing - well worthy of the three rosettes and breakfast was equally enjoyable.
Our room was immaculately clean and well laid out, and the bathroom was large with Molton Brown toiletries which was nice to find and always a sign of a top quality establishment.
As hoteliers ourselves, we are usually very critical but we can thoroughly recommend this place. We had a great time and although it was only one night, felt very relaxed and rejuvenated.
We visited Betws-y-Coed and a couple of waterfalls whilst in the area.

“We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2010

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Tan-y-Foel in northern Wales. We only wish that our one night stay had been longer. We also wish that we had had dinner there as well. Breakfast was delicious! The owners made us feel very welcome and at home. Thanks for everything!

“Unwelcoming host, overpriced”

Agree with many of the other reviews the host was unfriendly and we were not made to feel welcome.

The rooms were beautifully fitted although as somebody else stated the annex room does smell of damp. We learned a better room with view was unoccupied. We were baffled that we had not been offered that room initially and it was made clear that it would not be convenient to remake the beds as a twin room.

Breakfast was excellent although phrasing the breakfast menu 'choose ONE of' seemed unaccomodating for such a pricey establishment

“A truly beautiful place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 April 2010

We have visited this beautiful country house many times over the past several years - enough said! This has to be one of the best if not 'the best small country hotel in Wales.'
Just on arriving you will be wowed by the magnificent views of the Conwy Valley . The house itself is very old and full of character from the outside but step inside and it's a different story - very contemporary. Every room is amazing - a feast for your eyes and most overlook those lovely views in one way or another. Each bedroom has a different character, and is beautifully decorated, fantastic big beds many are king size or four poster, and lovely bathrooms. We have tried three of the guest rooms and can honestly say they are all gorgeous. The whole house is a credit to the owners - Peter & Janet, who take great pride in what they have achieved here, and all credit to them, it's a little gem. Peter is generally front of house and he does most of the decorating himself, is very knowledgeable and if you need anything well nothing is too much trouble, and Janet is most of the time behind the scenes creating some of the most amazing dishes you will ever taste - she is indeed a master of her profession and it just seems effortless to her. Each meal time is a different experience - and she makes her own bread, and after dinner home made chocs...yum! Another great thing about Tan-y-Foel is you don't feel like you are in one of those stuffy hotels in fact sometimes you feel like it's your own place, and what we like about it is at night time you can hardly hear a thing - no traffic just the occasional sheep and the birds in the morning. So kind of Peter and Jan to let us enjoy their beautiful house which they have worked so hard to create and well done to them both because it is lovely. This is heaven....a real treat!
