“I won't risk my health to eat there”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 November 2011

Cook would not serve me Prime Rib well done. I asked them to just put a slice on the grill, No way.. he said have the Rib Eye steak and I will cook it well done., he claimed it was the same??? I thought Prime Rib was a roast and how hard could it be to just cook it. I don't think rare to medium is healthy, I like it well done, so I ended up eating a terribly greasy pasta.. I will not eat there again.

The rooms and hallways were very dated and the furniture was worn dusty and dirty, my white duvet was stained ??? and lumpy and even though I had a non smoking room it was obvious from the smell the room had been smoked in, . I came back to my room while the maid was cleaning my room and found her washing out room glasses in the bathroom sink...not sanitary at all. most of the staff was friendly but had a very hard time with english...wouldnt recommend the place..next time i will spend another 20 bucks and stay at the best western

“felt like staying in a 1970's time capsule... very dated and in serious need of renos.. but friendly and reasonable”

Grande Cache is a gorgeous spot in the mountains. The restaurant was great and the staff were friendly. The building is very old and in need of serious renos. Looks like nothing but the beds and linens have been replaced since its origin. Gross carpeting. Our non smoking room smelled like smoke. Beds were clean and comfy though. I admit to being a bit of a hotel snob so take this review with a grain of salt if you're not spoiled and used to staying in newer accomodations. I would recommend staying in Hinton if you're in this area.

“Not only the cheapest stay on our trip across Canada, but the nicest!”

We stumbled upon this hotel in search of a pizza place a different hotel had recommended. We were just in need of dinner and a good nights sleep and both of our expectations were blown out of the water. The lobby was fabulous, the rooms were incredibly cheap and beautiful, 89 CA but supposedly can be as low as 69. Great restaurant as well, you'd be hard pressed to find a better one in Grand Cache. Even though we were just stopping for the night we wished we could have stayed in the hotel longer. If we were ever to go through again there's no doubt we would stay there. ALSO--Bonus it is a local place rather than a chain.

“Feather Duvets and a Real Chef”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 June 2010

Like many others, I was just looking for a bed for the night while doing some climbing. I googled 'Grande Cache Hotels' and checked into the first one that popped up.

I arrived expecting some small town motel, with perhaps a coffee shop, so-so cleanliness, modest rooms and maybe cable TV if I was lucky.

I checked in and headed up to my room and was delightfully surprised. The room had two queen beds, and the view overlooked a park behind the hotel instead of gazing up at the mountains. I tossed my pack in the corner and sat down on the bed to take my boots off. I sank into the feather duvet, and couldn't resist laying back and relaxing for a few moments. The beds are the best I've ever come across, and the feather duvets are a delightful touch of luxury. While the exterior of the hotel is kind of out-dated, the rooms were clean and quiet, and in good condition. Had a good late supper and slept like a log. The only flaw on the whole stay was not getting our wakeup call the next morning - the night lady was just about to go off shift and seemed more interested in going out for a smoke than taking care of her customers.

The day staff are excellent. Ask for Lisa or Jean Boudreau, the manager/chef. Restaurant servers are relaxed, small-town friendly, and very helpful, and even the maids seemed content. Breakfast at the coffee shop (opens early!) was good, and the waitress was pleasant.

We did a ten-hour hike then dragged ourselves back to the hotel. After a day on mountain trails, there's nothing like a hot shower, followed by a good restaurant meal. The hotel coffee shop closes early but the bar serves full-course meals, and the manager, who happens to be the chef, is proud to display some of his culinary awards when you walk in. The food was excellent, with a quite unexpected cosmopolitan menu and some extraordinary touches. And the cost was right - I got a great, full course meal for $25.00.

I've been at the Grande Cache Hotel twice so far, both times in the summer of 2009, and I'm going back up there this weekend to take a group of ten people to do some climbing. Needless to say, we're all staying at the GC Hotel.
