“Very, very disappointing. Avoid!!”

Parklane Motor Inn, Takapuna.

Booked a twin suite for three people and stayed there for two nights in January 2012. The rating is Qualmark 4 star, but I believe it should be MUCH lower for the following reasons:

1. Rust corrosion on the bathroom basin near the tap fitting.
2. One kitchen cupboard door was missing.
3. Blood stain on the mattress cover on the single bed.
4. Airconditioning unit positioned on the balcony outside the room had significant rust. Casing had a hole about the size of a dinner plate!
5. One power point in the kitchenette "blew" while I was trying to use the jug.
6. Fridge was dirty with fruit juice spillage when we took the room.
7. No milk provided, until I went and asked.
8. Minibar was incomplete when we checked in; I brought this up with reception, who said the housemaid "probably hadn't been through", and then did not follow up. This was not addressed at all during our stay. Not that we care for minibar stuff, just that we didn't want to be charged for missing goods.
9. Despite booking for 3 persons, towels and chairs for only 2 people were provided on check in.
10. Hair dryer not functioning.
11. Spare blankets and quilt just shoved into cupboard, instead of being folded neatly.
12. Spare mattresses and baby cot stored in stairwells, beneath open tread stairs.
13. Table surfaces in the room were dusty.
14. Towels were changed for us, but no other housekeeping done.
15. Appearance of the place was generally grubby and unkempt.

Altogether, a hugely disappointing level of service and not in keeping with a "4 star" rating. My recommendation would be to avoid at all costs.

Room Tip: If you MUST stay here, get a room away from the very very busy main road (Lake Road)

Our room was poor.
Moldy and dusty. Window ledges were rotting.
Curtains smelt dirty and dusty.
Carpets were worn and dusty.
TV from bygone era.
Who manages such a place?
Staff were pleasant on our departure.
Not recommended.

“Stayed 3 nights and wished it was longer.”

We stayed at Parklane for 3 nights and would reccomend it to all.

1. David is the host with the most.
2. The spa bath and jetted shower in our room.
3. The walk along Takapuna beach to the town centre.

Will definitely be back, without doubt.

“Great location, would recommend.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2011

Stayed here when we arrived into NZ and when we headed South after visiting the BOI. Good motor inn, really easy to find, not too far off the main motorway through Auckland so good for getting back on the road again. Also, nicely out of the main city of Auckland in the nicest part of the supercity. Rooms are fine, got everything you need. Would happily stay again!

“SADLY, A VERY DISAPPOINTING EXPERIENCE”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2011

Firstly, I would like to say that we do not usually complain about many things, but I just cannot let this go - I'm sure that other units within Parklane might be of a higher standard, but I need to review the unit we were allocated.

We had stayed at Parklane a few years ago and had been disappointed with both the condition and road noise issue of the unit. As the location is great and we had a wedding to attend nearby, we decided to give it another try. We used our Flybuys points to make this booking and made a specific request for a unit NOT on the roadside. When we arrived and registered I checked with the lovely receptionist that we were not next to the road. She said no, we were not by the road. She also opened an account with our credit card and took a bond of $100 'to cover any use of the mini bar". We thought this rather odd at the time as we had never had this happen to us before. We thought it alot odder when we got to our unit and there was no mini bar in it!! The unit we were allocated was also right next to the one we had stayed in before and right under the very busy main road! I went back up to reception to repeat my request for a room away from the main road. The receptionist told me that there were only two units allocated for bookings through Flybuys and that she could not offer us any alternative. This upset us greatly as these units are blatantly and obviously their oldest, noisiest units and we felt like second-class citizens. When we stayed here three years ago the rooms were in dire need of refurbishment. They are still in the same condition. The carpets and chairs are stained, the bathroom tiles are broken, the bathroom mirror light did not work, the kitchen cupboard door was hanging off its hinges, the cutlery drawer was dirty and full of crumbs etc. The unit needs a damned good clean - dead midgies stuck to the bathroom ceiling, grit and mould on all the windowsills and doorways etc. When we arrived back at the unit around 12.30am after the wedding reception, we pulled back the bedcovers to find two long black hairs in the bed ... we really hope they belonged to the cleaning lady and not the previous guests. There was a group of people in the units above us who were having a bit of a party and it was 3am before they quietened down. So, all in all, a very disappointing experience. We spoke to David (the manager) the next morning and passed on our concerns. He denied that there were only two units kept for Flybuys customers and told us that there had been no more units available. This was a blatant lie as there were several units away from the road clearly with no occupants - unless the guests got up and left at 5am and the cleaning staff raced in and did their thing by 6am!!

I really hate having to give a damning review, but Parklane deserves it - not just for the standard of their studio units, but for their attitude towards guests who have legitimate issues with their accommodation.
