“Taboo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2011

Was at Taboo for a 3 day conference in September. Because it was off-season, there were no other guests at the hotel (that i noticed), so the attention from the staff was top notch. The food was awesome...the wine was just so-so.
My room was overlooking the lake and the sunsets were outstanding. It would be unfair to rate this resort as a family getaway or vacation as that was outside of the scope of my experience. However, from a business conference and social-night perspective, it was very, very good.

“Had better rooms for a quarter the price.”

The room was outdated and tired (peeling wall paper, cracks in the tub) and really no different then a Best Western (at $379 a night in the off-season)

The pool change rooms were dirty, the sauna was gross (old, grimy and dirty) and the hot tub was all chlorine.

On a side note the food was great and the staff were friendly.

You're better off staying at a B&B and going there for dinner. This is not a luxury resort.

“Taboo Loses the Warm Fuzzies”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2011

Been coming to Taboo for over 10 years - way back when it was Muskoka Sands. Over the years that it has been Taboo, we have seen a general decline in services, amenities, staff, and general 'resort-i-ness'. This past visit was disappointing for an number of reasons.
Pool Bar - closed so early that one had no time for some kid-free swimming and indulging in adult bevvie/food. Food at bar: no vegetarian options although have been asking for years for some. 3 popular drinks were not available due to 'kitchen staff not bringing supplies'. Other outdoor pools: mostly cool, with one night at bathtub temps. Not consistent, and not very well lit). Indoor pool - too much chlorine and noise from screaming kids to be considered an option.
Boathouse - way overpriced, and again no veg options other than hummus plate.
Staff - seem to be cutting back on staff these days. The only (and always friendly) member of the staff is Irocki who goes out of his way to accommodate and make one feel special. Other staff members were reasonably friendly, but certainly not ready to do whatever it takes to get something done.
Piano: was removed from the lounge area . Sitting there at night for bevvie and snack sans kids is no longer an option as they have done away with friday night piano sessions. Too bad , as this was a great way to relax when the kids were in bed.
Cleaning Staff: friendly, nice clean job.
WaterFront: activities are twice what they were last year - $29.00 / 5 min ski/wake-board lesson is ridiculous. Staff there are always great though.
Kid activities: $30.00 for build a bear which is really just stuffing a pre-sewn 'taboo' bear.

Overall we didn't leave with a warm-fuzzy feeling. It was not good value for money paid and this may well be our last year coming.

Room Tip: North Shore provides the best Muskoka views

“From a non-golfers' perspective: nice rooms - food average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 September 2011

Alright, so to be fair I'm not a golfer and I had just come from Algonquin Park when I got here. So, that said, here are my comments:

THE GOOD
-Big spacious rooms
-gas fireplace with warmth that permeates the room, but does smell a tiny bit gassy
-lovely lake view
-comfortable beds
-huge bathroom
-free bike rentals
-NICE huge pool, hot tub, sauna - we were quite impressed with this
-good fitness centre

THE BAD
-powdered eggs for breakfast at a "luxury" resort?? SERIOUSLY??? No.
-the lake this place is located on is a little busier... quite a few motorboats, etc..
-food was really overpriced for its quality and nothing at all really had that wholesome, home-made taste... its that generic chain-restaurant feel
-coffee was not very good

“Not impressed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 September 2011

We have had two experiences at Taboo Resort: Once in 2010 as hotel guests and once in 2011 in the Boathouse restaurant. Neither one was impressive.
The hotel experience was mediocre , especially for the price. It wasn’t awful, nor was it great. Other than the views, there is nothing Muskokan about this hotel. This is really a shame because Muskoka has such a rich history of tourism and cottaging. The exteriors and interiors could be in any suburban office park in North America and aren’t a reflection of the beautiful area. Our room had been updated, but not renovated…stained ceiling, old bathroom…not what we were expecting. The Spa is actually a series of unused hotel rooms, so one leaves the Spa waiting room and walks through the hotel corridors for treatment.
At one point, I requested a meeting with the manager, who said that he was too busy to talk to me, and then made no effort to contact me during our stay...This was disappointing and spoke volumes about the approach to customer service.
In August 2011, we had a dinner in the Boathouse restaurant. It was shockingly bad! The service was unforgivable…the waitress only took some of the orders at the table and walked off before taking all of the orders. She was not only inattentive, but she made unapologetically rude remarks. The kitchen was excruciatingly slow and the food was not at all nice. Meals were over salted and cold by the time they reached us and one of them was incorrect. To be fair, the one nice thing about the restaurant is the view…very nice position and you can look over the lake.
Although it has the potential to be nice, indifferent staff and mediocre accommodations let it down. I would not recommend Taboo.
