We have had two experiences at Taboo Resort: Once in 2010 as hotel guests and once in 2011 in the Boathouse restaurant. Neither one was impressive.
The hotel experience was mediocre , especially for the price. It wasn’t awful, nor was it great. Other than the views, there is nothing Muskokan about this hotel. This is really a shame because Muskoka has such a rich history of tourism and cottaging. The exteriors and interiors could be in any suburban office park in North America and aren’t a reflection of the beautiful area. Our room had been updated, but not renovated…stained ceiling, old bathroom…not what we were expecting. The Spa is actually a series of unused hotel rooms, so one leaves the Spa waiting room and walks through the hotel corridors for treatment.
At one point, I requested a meeting with the manager, who said that he was too busy to talk to me, and then made no effort to contact me during our stay...This was disappointing and spoke volumes about the approach to customer service.
In August 2011, we had a dinner in the Boathouse restaurant. It was shockingly bad! The service was unforgivable…the waitress only took some of the orders at the table and walked off before taking all of the orders. She was not only inattentive, but she made unapologetically rude remarks. The kitchen was excruciatingly slow and the food was not at all nice. Meals were over salted and cold by the time they reached us and one of them was incorrect. To be fair, the one nice thing about the restaurant is the view…very nice position and you can look over the lake.
Although it has the potential to be nice, indifferent staff and mediocre accommodations let it down. I would not recommend Taboo.
