My girlfriend and I decided we wanted a winter getaway this year and, for a while, hemmed and hawed over where to go before deciding on Mont Tremblant and this location. And well, a little indecision ended up being a very good thing this time around! We decided to try someplace totally new and ended up at Avalanche, which hit the spot for both of us, to say the least.
Avalanche is a really nice little gem of a bed and breakfast located on the quieter, northern side of Mont Tremblant near Lac Superieur. We liked it here in part because, although it's somewhat off the beaten path, it offers peace and quiet in the middle of a beautiful winter setting and still with quick access to the village. The drive to town and the busier southern side is roughly 15 minutes...not bad. And better yet, why drive it when you can ski there? The northern lift, just a few minutes away, will take you straight to the top. From there, you can ski wherever you like, and this is how life should be.
The very helpful owners, Phil and Nancy, go out of their way to make you comfortable and spare no expense and effort in making the place look and feel very much like home. They were a great help with information and even lent us snowshoes so we could hike on a day that was too cold to go skiing. As for their place itself, details are everything and, from the moment you enter, it's clear this is something they've put some time and effort into. With everything from the sheets to decorations on the wall, you can tell that someone put some thought into each little detail. This goes for the food, as well. Breakfasts here are definitely a unique experience and they have the best hot chocolate ever. :)
And speaking of people, this review wouldn't be complete without mentioning the very nice neighbors who helped us out during our time of need while there. I grew up driving in snow and haven't had a problem in almost 25 years. Yet, of course, an hour after we arrived we ended up hitting ice and getting stuck in a ditch right around the corner on the way to a late dinner. That would have ended our night, but super nice neighbors that came to our aid not only let us in to use the phone (and translated); they also pulled us out! Having traveled to Canada tons of times over a period of many years, I am always surprised when I hear the occasional comment about people from Quebec being rude or stand-offish. Simply put, this has never been my experience at all and this perfect little spot sure hasn't done anything to change my mind.
To sum it up, you can get a room in a Hilton pretty much anywhere, but what you can't always get is CHARM. This place has it, and its owners and neighbors are great people. We left a little sad to see them in the rear-view mirror, but get the feeling we'll be back. :)
