My girlfriend and I booked one night here to participate in the Elgin County Railway Museum's Heritage Days and to ride on the Port Stanley Terminal Railway. After reading the reviews of the Ramada and the reviews for the Comfort Inn, we tried booking this location. For monthsm the week of the special event was unavailable, so we held a room at the Ramada just in case the Comfort Inn did not open up rooms. A week before we were to visit St. Thomas, many rooms opened up online. The website had a "railfan" special for 30% off so I held a King bed room at that rate as the website showed only a couple rooms left at that price and type. We eventually got a lower rate through my significant other's employer at half off. e then canceled our room hold at the Ramada, even though the Ramada is across the street from the Museum.
Finding the property is indeed a slight challenge as it is located on the outskirts of town. We brought our TomTom with us which routed us a slightly different route than I had tried on mapQuest.
We arrived in the late afternoon. The lobby was fairly empty except for one of the housekeeping staff taking their break and one young woman behind the counter. It looked like the lobby was very recently modernized; it was very clean and bright. We checked in (never was asked for an ID card to get the agent rate nor did the woman seem even aware of how to check ID for the rate we received). We were booked into a room on the 2nd floor near the breakfast area.
The room appeared a little older but tidy. true, the rooms seem to be needing an upgrade but there were no obvious items in disrepair. After unpacking, we left to meet friends at The Keg in London (a former CP Railway station right along the tracks).
After dinner and some sightseeing in London, we came back to the hotel. As we started to get ready for bed, some of the age of the room became apparent. We found a leak in the drain pipe under the sink and a small leak in the taps. The beds were very hard and the pillows too soft for my liking (the pillow problem seems to be a common theme in a lot of the older Comfort Inns I've stayed in recently).
We also noticed the carpets were a little dirty after looking at our feet after stepping out of the shower in the morning and noticing our feet were slightly black. The shower itself was okay, lots of hot water and pressure.
The TV channel selection and picture quality was fine. No LCD TV's here but more than viewable and easy to see.
The breakfast area has about five or six tables. There is a staff member on duty to ensure all items are fully stocked during the free breakfast hours. This area also seems to have been very recently updated.
After breakfast, we packed up and checked out. We mentioned the sink and carpet problems to the front desk; they seemed genuinely concerned we had a problem with our room. At the rate we paid, we weren't expecting any further discount and didn't ask for one. Hopefully they corrected the problem before the next guest used the room. The sink was usable with a towel underneath it but the carpet should be cleaned first.
Overall, the property looks like the new owners are making a serious effort at cleaning the place up. The lobby was updated and the parking area looked like it have been repaved in the last few months. I would consider trying it again when we go back next year for the next special event at the museum but not at the $100+ a night rate that is posted for the general public. I would look for a special of some sort on their website to bring the cost down to around $70-80 which is what the property is worth a night (in my opinion) until the rooms are updated.
