“Good Hotel - Great Place!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 February 2011

Dont normally write reviews, but in this case i felt it right to do so. Myself and 3 friends had an 11 night holiday booked since June 2010 and couldn't wait to go. As the excitement built and the time got closer, we kept reading up on Fernie, the town, the mountain etc. and we were regular visitors to Tripadvisor. About 6 weeks before we were due to go i read a couple of reviews on here that got me worried (ie. the negative reviews below). I started thinking we've booked a terrible place, and the trip was going to be a nightmare.

Then, on the 5th February 2011, we arrived at Stanford Resort, Fernie. The hotel was clean and tidy. The staff were excellent and extremely helpful throughout the day/night, nothing was too much trouble. The facilities were good, and after a great day up the mountain nothing was better than coming back to the hotel, hitting the swimming pool and water slide, then a sauna, followed by a long soak in the outdoor tub. All the above were clean!!!! We even received a free breakfast each morning that wasn't expected, but appreciated. The Stanford offered good, clean facilities, helpful staff and a very good price!

The town of Fernie was small but cool, and i'd recommend watching the ice hockey, a great laugh. The Stanford is halfway between the mountain and the town, so buses and taxis have to be used (a small draw back). We went with Inghams and they supplied free bus tickets to get to/from hotel to ski hill. In the evening we just got a taxi into town which was about a £10 (inc tip). This was between the 4 of us, so no hassle there.

Finally, the snow. We had 10 days, and it dumped good for 3 of those 10. (12cm, 18cm, 28cm and addtional snowfall some days and nights) Some of the upper bowls that were above the lifts and required a long trek were closed in the morning due to avalanche clearance, but the vast majority of the mountain was fully accessible and offered some great riding. It's a cool place, some great steep tree runs and off piste areas and i'd love to go again.

Overall, i'd recommend Fernie and the Stanford resort. We had a great holiday, good conditions, good riding at a great price.

“Beautiful hotel with outstanding amenities and excellent front desk staff.”

Actually had to stay here by default as the pre-booked condo with fernie condo rentals was a disaster when we arrived on our date of check-in. I called at 9:45pm to try find a room totally expecting to get gauged on price. The front desk clerk was extremely pleasant and easily accommodated us at a very reasonable price. When we arrived the clerk was even generous enough to upgrade our room to a loft on a higher floor for free to avoid us being disturbed by an ongoing highschool graduation party (much appreciated after a long ski day and 4 hour drive to fernie). The room was beautiful and had a rustic lodgy feeling with microwave and refrigerator. The pool had a great 2 story water slide and outdoor hot tubs were a bonus. They even had an outstanding continental breakfast with waffles. Not a single downside, would definitely recommend. Forgot to mention excellent location just 2 minutes from Fernie ski resort with views of the mountain.

“Hairs in the sheets”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2011

Our room in one of the condo units had 2 beds. When we were ready to go to bed we lifted the sheets to find hairs in the sheets. A lot of hairs. Both bed had hairs and obviously not ours.
The reception moved us to a room in the main hotel, a room just beside the reception. We heard the reception phone all night.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention - We greatly appreciate your feedback. We have taken steps to ensure that this problem will be prevented in the future. All of our housekeeping staff is now responsible for wearing hairnets during their shifts. We are also having management periodically inspect the rooms to maintain quality control in the condo units.

At the time of your stay we were not informed that the phone kept you up all night and apologize for any frustration this may have caused. Due to your feedback, we will now lower the volume on the reception phone in the evenings to eliminate unnecessary noise that affect our guests’ comfort.

At the time we gave you a free night stay for your inconvenience. This allowed you to stay two nights for the price of one. Combined with the efforts mentioned above, we hope you can understand we did and are doing everything possible to eliminate future issues. We do really appreciate your comments as they ultimately help us improve the level of guest satisfaction at the Resort.

“Never stay at the stanford!”

We went on a new years trip on a downhill riders trip, and the hotel treated us like criminals. Poor service, and unclean rooms. We were refused service at the restaurant because they wanted to close early. Told to wash our own sheets when we check out because we have a washing machine in our condo. The free continental breakfast magically became $10 the day after we arrived, which really speaks to their willingness to exploit their customers and the fact that there isn't anything else open on new years. One of our friends found blood in their room, and another found flies in every corner. NEVER STAY HERE!!!
P.S - The hottub looked like puke!!

I am sorry to hear of your frustrations and concerns regarding your stay over new years. We take a lot of pride in guest satisfaction at the Fernie Stanford Resort and I would like to help clarify some points:

We act as the property manager for the condo your group rented; each is sold as a fully contained unit with kitchen, washer and dryer. The policy in the condos (unlike at the resort) is that there is no housekeeping which we inform all guests. We are looking into how we can improve the communication in this regard to ensure there are never any future misunderstandings.

Our restaurant closes at 10pm daily. In our small town, there is little demand for a restaurant to be open later. This is also why your ski group was offered a complementary welcoming party on the night of arrival from 9pm to 1am with food service.

The hotel’s hot tub and pool are inspected daily by the hotel to ensure cleanliness and a proper balance of water parameters. In addition, the hot tub and pool are inspected by the city’s health examiner on a regular basis to ensure they continue to exceed all health requirements.

Based on guest feedback, during the ski season, we were attempting to offer an upgraded hot breakfast on weekends instead of the standard hotel continental breakfast. As a result of your concern, we are now offering our complimentary continental breakfast 7 days a week with some added hot items included.

We really appreciate your feedback and have taken steps to improve current and future guest experiences at our resort. I also invite you to contact the hotel to further discuss your stay.

“Tons of space.........”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 September 2010

We could have slept 10 people easily in this "chalet". Loads of space, upstairs and downstairs. There were just the 2 of us, but we entertained some local family members in the unit. It was good value.

These are privately-owned units, so there is some variations. The negatives were: dirty, stained carpet; no DVD player in the small TV (only VHS!!); no hair dryer; and one baking pan only (a broiling pan).

The positive features were the large space, good beds, easy parking out the front door, friendly staff in hotel, great Indian food in restaurant. Nice slide and hot tubs - pool a little chilly, but hot tub was great. Internet service was good in room. Fly fishing out your door on the Elk River.

If you plan to stay in the hotel, ask for a room away from the hot tub patio at front, go for the quieter river side.
