“Great Stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

I recently stayed at this hotel last weekend from 2/3/12 - 2/5/12 with family. I requested two rooms on a high floor and was accomodated nicely. This hotel is going under major construction and it is visibile. Based on previous reviews I had read I was concerned. I was pleasantly surprised to see the condition of the lobby, reception, swimming pool etc was good. I really enjoyed how spacious the rooms are. Unfortunately there was an emergency on Sunday morning at around 3:30AM where all guests were forced to leave our rooms while the fire department and then electrician came to fix a problem. Obviously this is not the hotel's fault and I cannot blame them. The only complaint I have is that while the fire alarm was going off there was no announcement on a PA system through out the hotel. Is this because the hotel does not have a PA system? Possibly....however if that is the case it should be addressed for people's safety. Other than that incident I would recommend this hotel to others and plan on staying next time I visit Gatineau/Ottawa.

Room Tip: High Floor

Glad you enjoyed the facilities, your concern over the Pa system has been noted and addressed, both through training and redundancy in programming of automated responses. The new Life safety system cutover in fact was only 48hrs earlier. The return to normal status that morning actually required a number of trades assitance to re-establish the system as we had sprung a leak on the new sprinkler system and the Fire Department wanted assurance that all technical aspects were back online, which they were and are. Again we are realy happy you liked the pool facilities.

Hope to see back here before Winterlude 2013.

Again thank you
Michael

“Nice for the price, but...”

Stayed 6 nights in this hotel while on a visit to Gatineau during last week of 2011. Despite ongoing renovations, I guess given the holiday time of the year, we did not feel the impact as the hotel was nice and really quiet from a renovation perspective, especially during the first couple of days. Having read comments from past visitors about the ongoing renovations, I asked the reception desk upon arrival if we could be located on one of the upper finished floors but we were told that we would have to pay a significantly higher charge than what we paid. We were eventually given a room on the sixth floor which we were told is not undergoing renovations but was in reality seeing some minor renovations (baseboards were being replaced and new carpeting) but the room itself was not a renovated one. In any event, our room was of very decent size and otherwise quite comfortable. Unfortunately, our stay was significantly disrupted in the last 3 days as all of a sudden it seemed the whole floor was overtaken by visiting families with young and very noisy children. Every morning during those days we were awaken early by kids playing in the hallways and running around worry free. On our way out of the room one day we even saw some little rascals literally playing floor hockey in the corridors, fully equipped with nets, pucks and sticks! So one thing for sure, you can say the hotel is kids friendly and thumbs up for that but for people like us who were actually taking time out from the hustles and bustles of a busy household I must admit we did not quite enjoy the sudden change from total quiet to total mayhem! This is when I wished we had paid the additional charges to move to higher floors.I realize that not much the hotel could have done about this other than perhaps offering to re-locate us to a quieter floor after we informed them of the situation but unfortunately such an offer did not come and I have a feeling that given the slow time of the year only one or two floors of the hotel were open anyway. Overall, I would have easily rated my experience with this hotel as 4 stars based on the first half of our stay but it is hard to justify such a score when we ended up being seriously sleep deprived in the second half.

Read your comments, pleased that you appreciated the quality of accomodations and a little dissapointed as you appear to be with the situation of your room beiing amongst a Hockey Team. I imagine you stayed stayed during the Kiwanis Tournament. It is tough to manage these groups even though they all sign a commitment to conduct with us.

I invite you to contact me through tripadvisor on your next visit to Ottawa and I will arrange an upgrade to one of our new long term stay suites on the Penthouse level. The view is same just 80 or so feet further up the skyline.

Thank you for your comments.

“The renovations at this hotel are nowhere near completed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2011

While our room on the 11th floor is quite nice, the renovations are not finished here. Additionally, I was extremely disappointed to find that the pool is closed. Had I known that ahead of time (we had been here twice in the past, and I had looked forward to doing deep water aerobics in their pool), we would have stayed elsewhere. The hotel is definitely not the same place we visited the past two times, and we would not recommend staying here in its current condition.

We acknowledge and apologize for your disappointment during your most recent stay. With the extent of renovations still remaining to be completed, such as the front entrance, lobby, and restaurant all within the next few months, you can expect that the process will continue on until, at least, April 2012. It is unfortunate that our notice of the ongoing renovations did not get relayed. I can assure you that the wait is worth the while. I will be please to talk with you about the renovations and what you can expect for your next stay at the Holiday In Plaza la Chaudière soon to be Crowne Plaza.

Best regards

“Last resort In Ottawa”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2011

On a last minute trip to Ottawa, the holiday inn was the only place nearby that had rooms available. The Hotel is a reasonable walk from downtown and Parliament Hill, but the hotel itself is not worth the cost. The halls on my floor were half painted and light fixtures were hanging from the wall. The halls smelled of paint but the smell did not bother me in the room. There was a notice that the water was turned off the day before my arrival, and the next couple of times that I turned on the water it sputtered and rust coloured water came out for several seconds. The room was extremely dated, and there was an unpleasant odor when I walked in the door.

The staff at the hotel were extremely helpful and the waitstaff in the restaurant were really cordial. The food was not too bad and was very quick and hot.

The hotel seems to be undergoing a very slow renovation and is very dated throughout. If you can stay somewhere else I would!

We acknowledge that the hotel is under major renovations & with many millions of dollars invested thus far. We currently have completed the 10th to 14th floors, and the 9th floor is currently, partially completed & we are continuing our way down throughout the entire hotel. When we have high demand for rooms in the area, to accommodate our clients, we open some floors that are in the process of renovation to accommodate some of the need. We always do our best to find space, allowing visitors to experience all our region has to offer. As with many dwellings, there are systems that require regular maintenance, and unfortunately, you happened upon one of those times that we had to service our water system. And with such, there is always a small period of time that the water must be run a bit to remove any discoloration throughout the system. This is why you experienced the conditions you did. But I can assure you that the rooms and floors that are completed are extremely appreciated by the clientele that have stayed in them, as they see the difference.
