5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2011

my mum and i stayed here in 2006 2011. very quite super clean There is a ducky for you bath and a lamb to make you laugh. There is a brollie to keep you dry in case of Wawa infamous rain. A core sample for your rock collection. books to read family games to play.Lots of jokes to read Photos to view. Then asuper breakie to get you reay for along day on the road You will be passing NORTHERN LIGHTS name along at the next place you stay so others will know the best place to stay. The Keepers of this motel are like family. You will plan your trip so you can stay there again LOVE IT

“Great place to stay when you're passing through”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2011

Our family stayed there about 9 years ago when we were on a long trek across Ontario. It was pretty dark when we got there and I thought it would be a typical so-so roadside motel, but I was wrong! You feel welcome as soon as you step inside the front door. Both owners were so nice to us. Our room was very clean. I loved the little personal touches including Mo's funny handmade signs in the room which I still talk about to friends. There was a big pile of granite-looking core samples out back (John told us some prospectors hoping to strike it rich had come through and dumped them--I'm not sure if they got lucky). Anyway he said we could have some if we wanted, so we did--they are unusual souvenirs. It was a long time ago so I don't remember particulars, but I do remember it was a great experience and it's nice to see they are still in business.

(The earliest date I could choose from the dropdown menu is Dec. 2010 but we actually travelled 2002)

Wow! Thank you for the review! We are thrilled that you enjoyed your stay - so long ago! We still have piles of core samples, and even put them in the Breakfast Room for the guests now. I've been told that I should make bookends with them.... It'd be a great winter project. We hope to see you again - lots has changed over the years!

“A welcome sight on the Trans Canada Highway”

We stayed at the Northern Lights on their last night of the season in mid-October, but their welcome was as warm as it could be. Very decent sized motel room, with large bathroom, comfortable beds, good TV and functiong WiFi. Our Golden Retriever pup was happy too, and tore around the motel site a couple of dozen times before retiring. The continental breakfast was laid on by about 6 AM to accomodate us early departures - and it was quite adequate. We would recommend Northern Lights to those on a road trip through the North of Superior route traveling with a pet, who won't mind the very retro appearance of this weloming Wawa wayside.

Thank you so much for reviewing our Retro Motel! Yes, the Chain Hotels are taking over (just like Walmart), but we have fun keeping this crazy business going! So happy that you enjoyed your stay and that your pooch enjoyed the grounds. We hope to see you again sometime! Cheers!

“All of those 5 star reviews are well-earned!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2011

The reviews for the Northern Lights Motel intrigued me so much that I just had to give it a try for our first stay in Wawa. And when I corresponded via email with Maureen, who owns the place with her husband John, her warm and friendly replies made me look forward even more to visiting the place.

The Motel is situated on Route 17 outside of downtown Wawa, but is very easy to find and drive to. Upon our arrival, we were immediately made to feel welcome by John.

Our room was spacious and full of all kinds of fantastic little touches, as detailed in the other reviews. From rubber ducks, to hairbands, sticking plasters to nail files, the owners had thought of practically anything you might need whilst travelling away from home. Best of all were some Hershey's Kisses left for us in the desk in our room. We took great delight in spotting all of these lovely little details. There was even some interesting reading material and cartoons attached to the loo door!

Breakfast foods are laid out in one of the rooms for the guests to help themselves in the morning. There was a good selection, including cereals, boiled eggs, bread (along with a microwave and toaster), jams, yoghurt, muffins, tea, coffee, fruit juice, etc. This is all included in the price, which is definitely great value for money.

We loved Wawa, which is an excellent base for visiting the Lake Superior Provincial Park - the drive up north from Sault Ste Marie is also breathtaking. Next time we visit, this will definitely be our top choice for somewhere to stay. Can't wait to return!
