We spent one night in the municipal campground at Riviere du Loup in
July 2005 (29.00 CD). It is on the outskirts of town, but still close
enough to restaurants, grocery stores (and, as since we unfortunately
needed it, tire stores!). The campground is very neat and is lightly
wooded, with some open spaces. The temperature was very comfortable. We
had driven from Montreal that day, and it was much more comfortable in
Riviere du Loup.
The roads in the campground are paved and there are adequate, clean
bathroom/shower facilities. The campsites have a fire ring and picnic
table. We had a water faucet as well. The park map shows centrally
located laundry facilities, but we did not use these.
The campground is on a bluff overlooking the St. Lawrence River, but not
all sites have a river view. Here's the link to the website: (----)
Canadian taxes: Canada has 15% tax on most purchases. Non-residents can
get part (or sometimes all) of that tax back after leaving Canada. Some
provinces combine the provincial and federal tax, and you can get a
refund of all of it, but some provinces separate the two, and you can
only get the federal part back.
Something to know: to receive a refund, each individual receipt must
total 50.00 before tax (I didn't know this beforehand). So, it pays to
group your purchases rather than stringing them out. To get your refund,
stop at customs before leaving Canada and have them stamp the qualifying
receipts. Hotel bills do not need to be stamped. They will give you a
form to fill out and mail back in. If the purchases are less than
500.00, I believe you can get the refund on the spot. Even with the US
dollar being stronger, I found prices in Canada to be general higher
than in the part of the US where I live.
