My husband and I wanted a short getaway for our anniversary and for some alone time after having twins in March. We chose St. Andrews because we could easily get a flight to New Brunswick and much of what I read stated how pretty and relaxing the town is. Also, wanting our stay to be special I came across articles about Kingsbrae Arms and it was ranked highly on Frommers (which I often us as my guide to choosing hotels). Well, we certainly were not disappointed! We have travelled a fair amount and stayed/eaten at many great places, but this had to be one of our favourites. From the moment we arrived and were greeted by Jonathan by first name, we knew this was going to be a great trip. Jonathan and Dominic were incredibly friendly and courteous and did everything possible to make our stay extremely relaxing and enjoyable. The Inn is beautiful. It is quiet, well decorated and our room (#14) was perfect. It was so much bigger than what you would expect for the price with all of the amenities one could want. We loved how the staff was so insistent that our trip be perfect and as relaxing as possible. Anything we needed or requested was immediately dealt with, in the most professional manner. The service really is top notch and very European -- something we are not used to here in Canada, generally. It just goes one step above and beyond your expectations. And by the end of our 4 night stay, we really felt at home at Kingsbrae and had developed a wonderful relationship with the staff.
One of the best parts of our trip, quite honestly, had to be the food! I hadn't known what to expect and we really do like to consider ourselves foodies. So, when I booked our stay, I opted out of the dinners and only reserved a table for our first night at the Inn. Well, that's all it took. After our first evening of the most scrumptous six course meal we have ever had, we didn't eat anywhere else. It was perfect from the first bite of tuna tartare to the final course of panna cotta. We were simply amazed that this little gem exists in a small town in New Brunswick. It really is something to rival some of the best restaurants in a large city. Chef Guillaume is truly an artist with food. We eagerly anticipated dinner each day...curious to see what was in store for us that evening. The best part was that any time something did not completely appeal to me on the menu, Chef was more than happy to substitute that course with another dish that was just as amazing. And as if that wasn't enough, the Inn is a bed and breakfast, and the breakfasts really were worth waking up for! We had anything from scrambled eggs (which we are still not sure how they could taste that good!) to homemade granola with yogourt and homemade rhubarb jam. Homemade pastries, freshly squeezed juice, fresh fruit. Simply delicious!
I really cannot say anything negative about our stay at Kingsbrae Arms or each of our meals. We cannot wait to visit again. After reading the many reviews from previous travellers and now having experienced it myself, I think as long as every guest reminds themself that Kingsbrae Arms is a wonderful Inn meant to treat you as an individual and create a peaceful retreat, not a hotel in a big city, then there is no reason why you won't leave wishing you didn't have to!
Thanks again to Harry, Jonathan, Dominic, Angel and Chef Guillaume! We hope to see you all soon.
Room Tip: Room 14 was beautiful. Spacious, well decorated and extremely quiet. Cute little balcony.
