“Rustic beauty in a rural setting”

We had the privilege of staying at the ranch for almost a week in January of 2012, and right from the start I would say we are anxious to go back again.

My purpose there was to lose a few pounds, and the Ranch provided the activities to achieve that. I participated in as many of the exercise classes that I could, which included pilates, yoga, bootcamp, and aquafit , to name a few. All were staffed by enthusiastic and highly trained professionals who made the classes fun to participate in.

My husband and I also participated in several of their daily hikes. The hiking guide, Karen, took pains to take us on a different hike each day to give us a fresh view of the beautiful countryside around the ranch. A nice touch was bringing along her dog, Yogi, as an extra security measure in case we should encounter wildlife.

The first meal we had there was a total surprise. Since I was on the weight-loss plan, I was amazed at how generous the helpings were. I was equally surprised at how delicious and flavorful the food was. Not what I was expecting from the “diet plan”. I was also delighted to be able to get a copy of the ranch’s recipes for the dishes I really liked. They were more than willing to provide this information.

Over the course of the week, we ate breakfast and lunch in the Trails End dining room, with dinner in the 1871 Agnus McVee dining room. As the week wore on, it became a real curiosity of mine to see if they would be able to maintain that level of deliciousness that kept arriving at our tables. Even my husband, who was not on the diet plan, commented on how good the food was. They didn’t let us down!

As far as the service was concerned, I give the Ranch five stars. Since we knew we would be seeing a lot of the staff on a regular basis, we made it our business to get the staff’s names, give them ours, and get to know them. It became clear very early on that: the staff enjoyed working there, and also, that they were committed to making sure we had a great time. We also had the pleasure of meeting with the owner, Pat Corbett, and one of the managers, Len Doucette. Both of them came across as very down-to-earth and pleasant. In talking to their staff about them, it also became clear what a high level of respect and admiration the staff has for these two. If you’re a student of human nature, you know that if you like the people you are working for, you are going to give them 100%, the staff truly did!!

I would best describe the look of the ranch as rustic, and for us the ranch had a warm, “homey” feel, with old vintage machinery scattered around the property surroundings.

If you’re the caviar and champagne type, this is not the place for you. Go to a 5 star hotel in a big city. But if you want warm, personalized service in a rural setting where the staff really know how to make you feel welcome, this place will bring you back for more.

“Chemical Perfumed Air Freshners Sprayed in Rooms & Chalets”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

I am sorry to say that as much as I used to just LOVE my trips to The Hills Health Ranch, I am no longer able to go.

I used to go with my girlfriends either every year or every second year for a 3 night get togeather in one of the beautiful chalets. We had such a wonderful time and the Ranch and Spa were just amazing.

This happened for over 15 years ago on a regular basis. Then on my last visit with my sister and some other friends my sister and I both got very sick there.

This is because the owner of the Hill's adopted a brand new policy of spraying all the rooms and chalets with FreeBreeze (a chemical based and perfumed air freshener spray). They do this each time a quest leaves.

As my sister and I have allergies we both get very ill when staying in a place that has been sprayed. We explained this in person to the owner while we were there and we explained that since 15% to 20% of the population has allergies and asthma to sprayed perfumed chemicals it is a very BAD idea to have this policy at a health spa. Unfortunately, the owner was very fond of this policy and did not want to listen to our requests.

Please see this Lung Association report at http://www.lung.ca/protect-protegez/pollution-pollution/indoor-interieur/scents-parfums_e.php

Because of this I no longer am able to go. I phoned the Hill's today because some of my girlfriends are going for a long weekend trip there and I REALLY wanted to go too. On the phone I asked the booking lady if they still spray the rooms and chalets with Freebreeze perfumed air freshner regularly and she said, yes that is their policy. I told her that I have allergies/asthma and could they not spray the chalet for one month if we tell them which chalet we want. The answer was a firm NO. They are willing to not spray the chalet the night before, but that is it.

I am truly sad that a health spa would be spraying perfumed chemical air freshners considering that people like me want to have a healthy chemical free experience at a health spa visit :-(

“Great Place for a X Country Ski Holiday”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

My husband and I just spent 4 nights at the Hills on a Groupon Deal and had a wonderful X country ski holiday. Our room was spacious and cosy and had a great view over the hills and terrain park area. We had one dinner in the restaurant and then decided to have picnics in our room as we so enjoyed it there and wanted to save some money. Although there is very little snow this year we had excellent skiing and saw very few people on the trails. As other reviewers have mentioned the facilities could use some updating but being able to ski almost from your front door made up for the shortcomings. Only one thing that definitely needs improvement is the front desk staff. We were simply handed a brochure with information as to rates for SPA and recreation services and no one took the time to give us a bit of orientation as to the various facilities and amenities. The woman who checked us out didn't even both to inquire whether or not we had had a good stay. We certainly aren't fussy people but it would be nice to feel that the staff cared about their clients. In spite of this we really enjoyed the Hills and will definitely come again.

Room Tip: If you stay in one of the hotel style rooms try and get one with a view to the hills and terrain par...

“Christmas Party 2011 - PMT”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2012

Our Company's Christmas party was hosted by Pat Corbett and his team at The Hills Health and Guest Ranch. Sixty four of us attended and some of us stayed over night. Many staff said it was the best Christmas party they have ever been to and we have been in business for 60 years. Staff commented on the exceptional food, it was amazing, the staff were very helpful and wonderful.

The room itself is unbelievable, the bar in it is 130 years old, wow. Sound quality was great for dancing, bar service was good, dance floor is a good size, we didn't feel crowded.

Bathroom facilities were great for the Ballroom.

The rooms were nice and warm eventhough it was -20 degrees celcius, the bedding was good, the bathrooms were spacious, just all around great.

We would highly recommend using The Hills as a place to hold a Christmas party, and if you are from out of town that is no problem they have lots of nice rooms.

Overall, great experience, I had a lot of fun to and will do it again.

“Rustic? More like rundown and beaten up!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

We are new to the area and have experienced several different areas. Most recently,Dec. 2011 for tubing and and downhilll skiing/snowboarding. If you are renting, the equipment is old and tired, probably at least 10 if not more years old, yuck. The T-bar is very difficult for beginning snowboarders and anyone else who is not a beginner would be bored after the first run. Tubing was fun for family except the septiclagoon (lake of raw sewage) is about 10 feet from the rope tow so as you wait in the line you get to enjoy the aroma of past guests. It is in plain view of the ride as you travel up. Apparently there are more lagoons that you get to enjoy on the cross-country ski trails.

The rooms for a family to eat or warm up in was ugly, smelly and had two dirty table with a pool table in the middle. Not cosy or comfortable at all. If you want a alcoholic beverage you have to leave your kids and go to the room next door. Which was a tacky 70'S lounge with ultra slow service.

As far as the spa goes, well lets just say you might be getting your treatment done by the caretaker and have your pedicure done in a "fancy" Dr. Scholls" foot bath. I wouldn't take a "free" spa treatment here.

The pool is adorned by lovely dusty plastic plants from the 80's. The pool is cold, dated and dirty and so are the change rooms. Nothing would make me think "SPA" at all about this place.

The building are also 80's decorated with ornate dust collectors and forrest green and dusty rose table cloths and doilies.

In the summer we had a private party in the "chuckwagon patio". It was $30/head dinner dessert included. Patio seating were 70's indoor gold boardroom chairs. The "Chef" was one of the executives of the resort. Cooks were busy with weddings. When we arrived at the BBQ our chicken was pre-baked and ready from the kitchen, the steaks were also pre-cooked, done medium, whether you liked it or not. Salmon was good. The buffet veggies continued the 80's theme: three bean salad, coleslaw, baked potatoes etc.

We would of gladly spent some good money on pre-dinner cocktails but there was no bartender so the waitress made our drinks. Ended up with beer and ceasars. Wanted some good wine with dinner about 10 or so decent choices from the menu. Anything palatable was out-of-stock. Drank crappy red and left a soon as dinner was over so we could go home and drink good wine. They missed out on some good beverage sales that night!

I have newly moved here and am blown away at the potential of this place. I wouldn't take a free trip here. The scenery is beautiful, horses etc. are all wonderful. The place is clearly in need of a lot of capital to either mow the buildings or attempt a refurbishment. A great opportunity for a future investor like the Hyatt.
