After shopping for many motels/hotels along Hwy 1, this seemed to be one of the cheapest options. Room was very clean, free Wi-Fi, good free breakfast, and the pool, spa sauna (included in the 80$/night) was a real splurge! Definitively recommend it.

my stay here was for work, and i was impressed by the cleanliness of the rooms and the hospitality of the staff on duty at the time............
When we arrived it seemed like a redneck hotel. People were sitting right outside their doors on plastic chairs drinking and partying. We found out the next day that this was the cleaning crew. They even took our plastic chair from in front of our room and weren't very friendly when we asked for it back. We had two rooms which had their own entrances but were also connected by a kitchen. The rooms felt and looked dirty. The front desk staff was rude. The only good thing I can say about this hotel is the pool was nice and my kids liked it except for the fact it was crowded. Breakfast was served from 7-9 in the front office which doesn't have enough room for everyone. It was crammed with only one table, one toaster and only served bread, coffee and cereal. The town was also a HUGE disppointment. We tried to go to the Grizzly Restaurant and were turned away at 8:03 because they closed at 8:00 on a Saturday night to boot. The town is run-down and doesn't offer anything. Do yourself a favor and go to a nicer town.
Golden was a convenient stopping spot on our travels through the Canadian national parks, so we booked a night at the Sportsman. It's a pretty bare-bones roadside motel: outside corridors, no elevator, very basic room, minimal breakfast. But for a one-night stopover, it was actually fine. The rooms are actually on the large side, and it seemed clean although somewhat dated. All we really needed was a place with comfortable beds and a clean bathroom, and the Sportsman delivered just enough to make this an acceptable stay.
The breakfast in the morning, in the tiny front office, consisted only of two types of cereal, orange juice, and bread you could toast. And there was only seating at two small round tables and a couch. It's less of a breakfast than most motels and chain hotels offer. But as bare-bones as it was, it again did the trick.
I can't say I understand some of the reviews that rave "we loved it!", because this is about as basic a motel as there is. But if that's all you need and expect, then it's fine.
We stopped there on our way to Calgary...They have a realy nice pool with an awesome waterslide! The kids loved it! Yasim, at the front desk, was amazing. So friendly and helpful and really nice to the kids.Only camplaint is that the contential breakfast is from 7am to 9am and we think it should be till at least 10 or 11am. We will diffenatly go back if and when we are in the area!!
