“Be careful!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

I've stayed here two occasions. Most important thing to know is they apparently don't guarantee a quiet room because the hotels sits on a pub they own that plays loud music late into the night, midnight on my stay. Staff can't help and don't seem to care. On the last stay, had a more quiet room, but woke up to the maids trying to get in my room to clean -- even though I had a do not disturb sign on the door. Then I went to breakfast, with the sign still on the door, came back to find them cleaning my room -- hadn't checked out, hadn't taken the sign down????!!! If you want quiet and private, stay away.

We do have a pub and we also have a wing of rooms that are directly above our pub. We are always very up front with our guests about those particular guest rooms and we simply can't guarantee quiet in that particular area. These rooms are sold at a discount as a result.

I am happy to hear, however, that you were able to be located to a quiet room on your next stay with us. It appears as though the housekeeping staff clearly did not respect your 'Do Not Disturb' sign and for that we truly apologize. Typically our housekeeping staff would never make this type of mistake but perhaps we had a newer employee that was not aware of making sure. I can't say for certain but it is unacceptable that you were awoken early and that they entered your room when they shouldn't have.

Your complaint will certainly be discussed with the staff and we apologize for falling short of your expectations. Feel free to contact me directly at rmartin@humehotel.com to discuss things further.

“Old time charm”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

I stayed there while traveling back / forth to Baldface lodge catskiing - couldn't make it there without an overnight stay.

The Hume is an older hotel & all that you would expect with an older place (ammenities aren't completely up to date), but the staff is very friendly & they try their hardest to take care of you.

As I was staying on a weekend, they put me up on the 4th floor to get away from the potential noise of the bar & nightclub on the lower floors (it seems those are the place to be in Nelson for partying). A word of warning if you do the same - the heating is old fashioned radiators & there is no thermostat - it got pretty hot up there - I had to open the window (in the middle of winter ) to cool it down + run a fan they have left in the room. I am not sure if the same issue exists in other rooms or floors, but you might want to check with the staff on that.

Other than that, no complaints.

Room Tip: 4th floor was hot at night

It is true that all of our guest rooms are equipped with steam radiators - definately part of the heritage charm here at the Hume Hotel. You could also have turned the valve on the radiator to the 'off' position so the heat would not be on full throughout the night. We do always recommend opening the window even just for a minute to cool the room down if you find it is too hot.

Thanks for the feedback. We appreciate that you chose us and hope to see you again in the future.

“These guys run a tight ship.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2012

Every part of this hotel is awesome! I've frequented the pub, lounge, club, restaurant and liquor store for years and NOW I have tried the actual hotel. The best part about the Hume is the staff. The service here is TOP NOTCH every time! The room was cool. It had an old-west vibe to it. Apparently Willie Nelson once stayed in the room I stayed in. Room #222

The food is amazing, the best pizza in Nelson. They make a mean caesar there too.

Room Tip: Willie Nelson once stayed in Room #222

“Hip, Historic, Helpful, Happenin' Hume Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

The Hume is one of those rare hotels that is authentically charming and hip, all at the same time. The Hume has tons of character, like you'd expect from a gold rush town, and it's been cherished and renovated to highlight that history. The rooms and hallways are quaint with lots of great old photos and furniture, but the beds are comfy and there's free WiFi. We always look forward to staying here. It is seriously one of our favourite hotels ever! Highlights include the Library Lounge (our favourite), one of the coziest places to have a drink. We always feel lucky if we're there on a Sunday to catch local musician, Niko, strumming guitar and singing like Chet Baker. There are many options when it comes to eating and drinking at the Hume . There's Mike's Place Pub which is always entertainingly busy with a young university pub vibe and great food specials. We had a big plate of yummy spaghetti for $6.99. There's also the General Store Restaurant with funky booths and decorative antiques and complimentary breakfast with your stay... which i might add was not the usual cereal and muffins. I ate a shrimp benedict with creamy dill sauce. The basement of the Hotel even has a "state of the art" nightclub (Spirit Bar) with a great sound system and a surprisingly packed schedule of world class DJs and bands. There's even a liquor store, spa and a hair salon. I can't say enough good things about this place. The staff is super friendly and you really feel "at home" here. I went to dinner in my socks. :)

Wow, thank you so much for such a detailed review of the Hume. It was eloquent and you covered every corner of this place. You have truly experienced all the great things that really set us apart from every other hotel out there. The many different facilities each with its own ambiance - our restaurant, lounge, pub, liquor store, day spa and nightclub. The live jazz, the full hot made-to-order breakfasts, the hip heritage character and you even mentioned our staff which is truly the greatest part and our most valued asset. We appreciate you telling the world about the "athentically charming" Hume Hotel.

We hope to host you again soon.
