The Tete Jaune lodge is a very well-kept 60's-style motor inn nestled by the river just north of Valemount. They also have a hostel in a separate building, and campsites, RV sites and teepees down by the river. Our group of 20 stayed there and everyone fell in love with this little place.
The location is great. The large property is located right next to the river where salmon spawn in late summer. In fact, they have a wonderful deck with chairs and a fireplace right next to the water. There is also a small restaurant right next to the river, which they will open for large groups.
It made a perfect stopover for our group en route from Victoria to Edmonton. If you're visiting Jasper and wanting to save a few loonies on the hotel, this place would be perfect, as its only an hour away from the heart of the park. Snowmobilers and skiiers would do well staying here in the winter, too.
The staff were great. Ailie was very patient in answering all of my questions and dealing with the logistics of bringing in the group. She also was quite informative about the history and geography of the area. And as if that weren't enough, she knew we didn't have time to stop for breakfast, so she baked our entire group muffins! (they were delicious, BTW, Ailie!)
A word about the hostel: Four members of our group stayed in the hostel and we all agreed It was great. In fact, I regret the term "hostel," because its basically a house with 6 bedrooms and two bathrooms. It felt like we had our own little house for the evening. There was a full kitchen at our disposal, with everything we needed to cook and eat. In addition, there was a big screen TV with tons of channels a PS2 downstairs.
Not that we had any desire to sit around in front of the TV. The location was incredible, in terms of natural beauty. Mountain vistas in every direction. There's a river-rafting place right next door, and I MUST come back to stay in the hostel, go rafting, and explore the area.
What else? Everything was clean. They have wi-fi. All the motel rooms have micro/fridge combos. You can pull your car right up to your door. The country location is perfect for those wanting to get away from the city--you won't find any other businesses for a several kilometers (other than the rafting place). There is a small general store in the lobby.
ONE WARNING: BRING BUG SPRAY!!! The mosquitoes are terrible in the summer. They do go away once it cools down in the evening. If you forget, they sell it in the store, but it ain't cheap!
I truly hope to come back some day when I have time to relax and enjoy this fabulous place.
