“Great setting and relaxing sleep”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 May 2010

The splash pass is a good price. $10 pp to access canoes, kayaks and other amenities down at Fairy Lake. I have stayed there numerous times for business, and can surely say that unless you are traveling with a family the best value is in the Pavilion (main building) room. The suites are really tired and a pain in the butt to get in and out of if you have gear. Ask for a Garden view room so you don't get stuck with a view of the parking lot. I never eat at hotel restaurants, but once had take away from the Maple which was well priced and tasty. Gym gets busy, and also try and avoid conference bookings that you aren't attending.

“Deceptive Pricing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 May 2010

A lovely high end resort in a beautiful setting with all sorts of amenities. The sort of place where you would expect to pay a premium price. So why doesn't Deerhurst tell you the full price? We are attending a conference at the resort this year as we have in the past. Our large group negotiated a "special" room rate, i.e. $139.00 per night. So far so good, however, when you go to pay for the room - big surprise. The rate is for the room only. If you wish to actually use it, say for example to sleep in it, then it's an extra $10.00 per person per night!!! Total with tax $174.90 for two, $163.90 single. I believe there is a term to describe this type of pricing and it probably doesn't fit the image that management is pursuing. "Special" indeed!

“NOT WORTH THE DRIVE”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 May 2010

We went to the resort as part of a conference. We were given room 114 in the Bayshore units. The bathroom hadn't been cleaned. There was soap left in the bathtub, and the counter had coffee stains that hadn't be cleaned. I I contacted the hotel and asked for the bathroom to be cleaned, and to provide us with new towels. The staff were quite surprised by my request as they told me that room had been cleaned over a week ago.
When we returned from dinner, the soap was gone, counter hadn't been cleaned and a plastic bag with towels had been dumped on the counter.
In the morning when we went to make coffee, we discovered coffee grinds still in the basket.
You can imagine our surprise, since we had been told the room had been cleaned over a week ago.
We needed to take a shuttle to and from the main hotel, and all I can say is our driver Phillip was the only staff member who greeted us with a smile and was pleasant.
The hotel is under renovations and maybe thats why the staff all appear unhappy and miserable.
Complaints at check-out the next day were shrugged off without even a token apology.

“Much better than expected”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 April 2010

I was pleasantly surprised as the resort was much better than I expected from previous reviews. We stayed in a 1bedroom suite with 2 double beds in the bedroom, a kitchen area, dining table and sitting area with sofa and 1 chair. We all ended up sleeping in the bedroom but could have pulled out the sofa bed if needed. Fireplace was small but gave out plenty of heat. The bathroom was small, only suitable for one person at a time when getting ready - but there were mirrored wardrobes in the bedroom so my teenage daughters could apply their make-up !! I would ask next time for a lake view as our room overlooked the side of the building next door. Check-in was quick and staff pleasant.

We ate our evening meal at Maple and the food was very fresh and nicely cooked, we had a dining credit so it worked out as good value for the money we had to pay extra. There were a few families and groups with younger children but they sat them all in the same area so as not to bother the other diners. We cooked our own breakfast in our room and the kitchen area was well equipped with everything we needed.

The pool area was rather unimpressive and is in need of refurbishment - very 1970's concrete. The womens changing room had a carpeted area that smelled of vinegar. Showers were clean but the soap dispensers were empty and I had forgotten to bring some shower gel/soap over to the pool. The towels they provide were rather old and worn, next time I would take my own.

Ice skating was closed due to the weather being too warm, but the staff were very friendly and apologetic. We went skiing at Hidden Valley, very convenient and a lovely setting. Beware if you need the introductory lesson package as their website is misleading by stating that it runs several times during the day - it only runs twice and we had just missed the last one. We had to pay out a lot more money for an hours private lesson by a disinterested instructor, a separate lift pass and equipment hire - the introductory package is a much better deal.

I would definately consider going again, maybe in the summer or fall as I am sure the area will be beautiful and my husband would like to try the golf courses. Even my teenagers enjoyed it and said they would go again.

“Good stay for Easter”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 April 2010

Our family had a good stay at Deerhurst. I read the reviews and was not expecting much. Yes, the hotel is dated..too bad..if they had new furniture, carpets or even a nice floral arrangement at the lobby would have brightened things up. Check in was a breeze the concierge was very nice and helpful. They allowed us to check in early. Our room was clean, could use newer carpet. The Easter activity such as the Easter egg hunt could have been better planned. Overall--ok stay for a weekend.
