We traveled to Kenora to attend a local car enthusiasts weekend event. Although another hotel was recommended by the 'hosts', we decided to stay at the Travelodge as I frequent another one quite often for business, therefore had accumulated points that could go towards our room. I was a little taken back at the look of the place upon arrival but decided 'not to judge a book by its cover'.
Check in went fine. Parking was another matter. Very odd set up with there being two buildings to the hotel and the main parking was behind the second building and very cramped.
It wasn’t until late in the evening, after returning from our event, that things started to go wrong. As we prepared to settle in for the night, I noticed the bathroom sink was quite slow draining and every time you flushed the toilet, the tub drain made loud gurgling noises which seemed odd so I made a mental note to mention it to the front desk in the morning. We found the room to be quite warm so thought it best to put the air conditioner on for the night. Had I known we were going to need ear plugs to do so, I would have brought some! Although the noise from it was unbearable, so was the humidity which left us with little choice but to put up with it. It was obvious this was not a recent problem as I found a wrapped candy jammed into the slots, obviously from another frustrated guest trying to stop the vibration noise! If that wasn’t bad enough, the pillows on the bed and in the closet were no help. Flat, with compressed lumps of whatever, is the best way to describe them.
After a restless night, I got up in the morning to take a shower. Another event in itself. The water temperature changed so many times I lost count. I experienced warm water, freezing cold water and scalding water numerous times all within the one attempt and with little to no warning it was going to change. Upon finishing my shower, my husband greeted me with more news – although we had coffee, creamers etc., we had no coffee cups!
Already running late, we gave up and left the motel, hoping we could find time later to come back and speak to someone at the desk. Unfortunately, we did not return until late that evening and had to endure another night listening to the air conditioner and sleeping with flat, lumpy pillows.
Upon check out the next morning, I waited to see if the desk clerk was going to ask us how our stay was. She did not, but nor did I say anything to her at that time. I had already decided I would make sure a written complaint was sent. Upon returning home, I sent an email the hotel directly, outlining our concerns. I did receive a 'READ' receipt which means they did read it but there was no response from them whatsoever.
I will make a point of letting the organizers for next years event know, so they do not recommend this hotel to anyone attending.
