“Where are the maids?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 October 2011

The woman at the desk was very helpful. The restaurant was good.

However, the building is in rough shape. There are two large buildings joined by a long, long, long tunnel that never seems to be vacuumed. Every building and hall has heaved off level. The swimming pool water is an inch from the edge at the deep end and more than a foot and a half from the edge in the shallow end, no exaggeration. It would be a nightmare for anyone with mobility problems.

The halls and the rooms in the 200 block smell like kitchen grease. We were able to open our windows as they faced the back yards of homes. The themostat was impossible to work. The furniture, especially the beds, are old, squeaky, and unstable. Like most hotels, sound was an issue.

On the second day the toilet kept running. I jiggled the handle and the tank eventually filled. However, it took five minutes between flushes. When I called the desk, someone came in five or ten minutes but said, "It's a slow toilet." and left. It wasn't before. I guess they are used to things not working properly.

The biggest issue was the lack of maid service. The second day, no one came to our room at all. The third day they changed the sheets, replaced towels, and may have cleaned the tub. However, it did not seem vacuumed and the sink was definitely NOT cleaned.

Although the pool was warm and it was nice to have it to myself, the water in the shallow in was so low (because of the sinking floors)I could only swim half the length of the pool without hitting bottom. The hot tub was small but pleasant. However, in order to get to half the rooms, people have to walk trhough the pool area. Also, I don't know how they ran out of pool towels when in four days, we only ever saw three kids swimming.

The place was cobblestoned together and needs to be torn down and rebuilt with some decent planning. Cleanliness needs to be stepped up.

I will not go back.

“so-so”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2011

Lobby is nice and Katie at the front desk was very helpful. As others have said, the parking is an issue; even driving a small Toyota Corolla, I had to maneuver very carefully through the lot. The signs warning about bear sightings in the parking lot were a nice touch - better to be warned than surprised, I guess. Thankfully, I never saw any of them. My room was clean, but very small, old, and noisy. I also nearly got electrocuted by one of the lamps, which I imagine is why it was unplugged to begin with ("Why was it still there?" would be a better question). The indoor pool and hot tub are great, plus the pool is the only one I've ever seen that's built on a slope.

“Terrible - hotel overbooked and no place to stay at 2 am.!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 August 2011

Booked one night's stay for travellers while they were enroute to Kenora, approx. 2 hours prior to arrival. Received confirmation etc. Travellers arrived and were told that there was no room - even though they found the name of the reservation in their system; the hotel was completely booked! This was the second reservation that was overbooked; they had absolutely no accommodations to offer and were unable to find any other rooms in the city. I called Central Booking and got the initial run around (system not updated; I had to call back in 10 mins.). When I called back I was told that the hotel cancelled the reservation. Central booking could only check other Travel Lodges for alternate accommodation. Could offer nothing more...the hotel said Central Booking made a mistake and overbooked and was blaming it on the hotel's software system. The hotel receptionist tried to find alternate accommodations in Kenora but everything was booked. Travellers re-packed their bags and sent on their way with nothing but a promise that it will be looked into!!!! Close to 3 a.m. after travelling for over 10 hours!!!

“Dirty and loud”

There were two good things about this hotel, the front desk staff were friendly, and the air conditioning worked.

We needed a place to stay while passing through. Found this hotel and they had a room for the night. The first thing that hit me was the overwhelming smell of cigarette smoke in the hallway. It was bad. The room was dark and the carpet was disgusting, there was dirt or something all over the electrical outlet where the tv and lamp were plugged in. Couldn't get the lamp to stay on, would press the plug back into the outlet and it would come on, but let go and it would go off. The bathroom had one wall with random hairs stuck all over it, and the corners all had cobwebs, dust, dirt, who knows what else. The shower was okay, but the temperature would change between warm, freezing, and really hot frequently throughout the length of my shower. Some of the towels had stains all over them. We also constantly heard what sounded like people stomping around in other parts of the hotel.

The room was quite expensive for what we got. Won't be going back!
