Stayed for 2 nights, July 29-31. Reserved one room as part of a wedding block at the nightly rate of $130 CAD. I was hoping to stay at another hotel in nearby Ajax, but I had been to Whitby before so I was okay with staying at the Holiday Inn.
We arrived in the afternoon for check-in. Staff at the front desk was very helpful, and there was always someone at the desk whenever I passed by. Upon check-in, we received a bottle of wine (marked with the names of the wedding couple) and a box of truffles that was compliments of the hotel since guests of another wedding staying at the hotel also received the gift package.
Our king room (209) had a view of Consumers Drive and the free parking lot. In fact, we had a clear view since the window screen was falling off and we removed it for fear of it falling off. The room also had a lounge chair, desk, mini fridge, microwave and flat screen TV. It was slightly noisy early in the morning as the room seemed to be located above the laundry facilities, but we were still able to sleep.
There is free wireless Internet available in the hotel and a free terminal located in the lobby, which I used on occasion. It was quite functional, but access was slow and its use was rather popular among the children staying at the hotel that were playing in a local lacrosse tournament.
The hotel offers a very good breakfast buffet in a room near the lobby. There are juice and coffee machine to go with a selection of scrambled eggs, sausages, cereal, bread, pastries and bananas. (The waffle machine was not functioning when we were there.) Also close to the lobby is a good gym with two treadmills, a recumbent bicycle and an ancient stepping machine.
Since the hotel only has three floors, there is only one elevator serving the upper two levels. This meant that there was frequently a wait to use it. As such, we often took the stairways located at either end of the hallway.
As others have stated, the hotel is located just off the highway and close to two other hotels (Residence Inn and Motel 6), a Canadian Tire store and some chain restaurants. We asked the front desk for a walking plan, and they recommended we walk downtown along Brock Street. While there isn't much there, we did find the No Frills and FreshCo supermarkets so we were able to stock our mini-fridge with fresh fruit.
If I needed to stay at a hotel in Whitby again, I would consider the Holiday Inn for its location. As others have stated, though, there are likely better options available along the highway at a better price.
