Was surprised to see that the rating dropped from #1 to #2 on tripadvisor. We picked Cedar Springs because of the positive reviews. My wife and I stayed for 2 nights in the upper room, the same room that "PeterFindon" described in their post.
We had a lovely stay at Cedar Springs and rate it amongst one of the best B&Bs we have stayed in around the world (and my wife and I travel intentionally every year and around the world approx every two to three years).
1) all the windows apart from the small window described by PeterFindon has blinds. It is not overlook by any other buildings (nearest building in that direction is over 100m away) but should be equipped with blinds for extra privacy. The rat of the windows in the bedroom are better described as skylights that can be opened rather than windows
2) our last day of stay happened to be a changeover day in the other two rooms and we had the opportunity to check them out. In our opinion the upstairs room is by far the best room
- in the morning, you wake up to a view of the mountains
- the room upstairs consists of the bedroom, a reasonable sized bathroom with a double sized shower (~2mx1m), a separate TV room with view of the mountain (spacious enough for a large desk and two armchairs), a small built in wardrobe and a spacious built in luggage storage space. As the title suggested, we also checked the place out for suitability as a base for a ski trip, in particular whether it had sufficient space for all the ski luggage and be comfortable to hang around in during the day during rest days. We deemed it perfectly suitable.
3) the blinds are not sun blocking type. The room is reasonably bright even with the blinds down during the day. At night the only light from outside is moon light and star light. So probably not suitable if one wanted a dark room to sleep in during the day, but as tourists my wife and I were out most of the day and rather enjoyed watching the stars through the skylights at night.
4) breakfast was fantastic and as far as B&B goes it was as good as others we have had and only shadowed by the tented camp we stayed in on our safari in Kenya where we had our own private chef and butler.
However, the thing that made the stay memorable was Rob and Ingrid. They are a lovely British couple who went out of their way to assist their guest and visitors. On our first night a newlywed couple dropped in hoping looking for accommodation after having been all around town without success. Cedar Springs was full, and Rob called around until he found suitable accommodation for them. They were also well known in the town, with people in the town (in shops and restaurants) complementing Rob and Ingrid when they found out we were staying in Cedar Springs.
Having to travel for work regularly, staying in the likes of the Westin, Hilton, 4 Seasons, my wife and I rather enjoy the more personal settings of B&Bs when we holiday, not to mention the company and local knowledge of good B&B hosts.
Finally, Canmore is an industry town and not a tourist town. The tourist attractions are not in Canmore. However, it has all the amenities a tourist needs and nice restaurants with good food without the tourist town attitude and price tag. Personally I hate being treated like a cash cow in tourist towns with everybody wanting a piece of me. When we were in Banff, a small Japanese restaurant demanded 20% tips for a quick lunch (food was good but service wasn't), and at Miette Hot Springs the food and service were both poor, but the restaurant on their bill had a default 18% gratitude. I have no issues with rewarding good service, but just because I am a tourist doesn't mean I am an open wallet.
