“Large chalet but shabby lodgings”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 October 2010

The chateaus sleep 6 people (or more), with a double bed upstairs in a loft, a sleep sofa in the living room, a separate bedroom downstairs, and a Murphy bed in the mud room. There is a nice big deck off the living room. The bathrooms are adequate, as is the kitchen. The indoor pool is good sized & there is a hot tub next to it. The outdoor hot tub had been closed by the health department!!! The shower room was adequate. The lodge was large with a basement for ping pong, pool, etc. There were tables & chairs upstairs for card games or just lounging. The big problem was the overall shabbiness of the unit (dining room table that needed to be refinished, pieces missing from the bathroom counter top, etc. There was not enough silverware for more than 3 people. There were no table linens. The location is a 15 minute drive into Canmore & a half hour to Banff, so the name is misleading. There is nothing in Dead Man's Flat (where the resort actually is) besides 2 gas stations. The "restaurant" & "grocery" are just part of one of the gas stations. For a real grocery store or good restaurants, you must drive into Canmore. Outside of the distance to a real town, the location is beautiful, with mountains all around, so I would recommend it for that, the indoor pool, and having your own cooking facilities. Internet service was sporadic.

“Clean, well equipped, staff friendly very convenient for trips out”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2010

We had a very pleasant stay here at the end of a four week trip to Canada. We found the unit a reasonable size altho some of the facilities i.e. downstairs shower, wasn't completed, to be comfortable, adequately furnished, with beautiful views. The staff were helpful and polite.

We met some fantastic people, named Jan and Gary who I have been trying to contact, but unfortunately the e-mails do not seem to be getting thro, so if anybody know them?? tell them June and Dave would love to hear from them. They are owners at this resort.

“Quaint Little Condo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2009

We enjoyed our stay at the Banff Gate Mountain Lodge. There were tons of activities, and the recreation coordinator invited us several times to join in on the fun! Activities offered were hikes, chocolate factory tours, wine and cheese night, movie night, lantern building, vertical climbing (at a nearby facility). The gym was adequate, the pool, sauna and hot tub were great, a nice way to end the night.
I didn't use the spa facilities, so I can't comment on that.
Also there were many movies that you could borrow from the front desk, so that is a bonus.
You can get wireless internet connection, but you must be in the front lobby area or the upstairs games area.
Our condo was quaint and cozy. It was very clean upon arrival. It was a perfect little getaway with all of your at-home ammenties: full kitchen, 1 1/2 baths, washer/dryer, 2 bedrooms, table for 6, fireplace, 2 tvs and couch. Lots of storage here!!
One thing people must realize, that this is not a hotel so you should not expect hotel service as in towel changing/bed-making, etc. The staff at the front desk did mention that if we wanted new linens that we should just bring our used ones to exchange them. You do have to do your own cleaning on departure which consists of having the dishes in the dishwasher, and emptying out your garbages-not a big deal.
One thing I would have to say we didn't care for was the close proximity to HWY 1.Although we didn't hear the noise from the road and/or the train because of where we were in the complex, but I would definitely not want to be in the front row of condos.
Otherwise the location is superb! About a 5 minute drive into Canmore and 2 min drive to the gate of Banff National Park!

All in all, we had a great time! We thought it was a perfect little getaway, very easy to spend the week there and I would go back!

“Great Place for What We Needed”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2009

We were pleasantly surprised here after reading all the bad reviews. We found the place to be very clean (but did note the antiseptic cleaning smell) which we alleviated by a scented candle. The service/staff were attentive to our needs, courteous, friendly and helpful with information. The beds were comfortable. We especially enjoyed the outdoor terrace off the bedroom for happy hours in the sun with a great view of the mountains. The location was excellent - 5 minute drive to the town of Canmore in one direction for restaurants and groceries and 5 minute drive to the Gate of Banff National Park in the other direction. In short the place fit our needs well, we were comfortable there and enjoyed our stay. Must admit we are not into doing spa treatments or laundry on this type vacation. We were there to experience the national parks and to enjoy the great scenery of the Canadian Rockies doing different day trips before going up to Jasper for a few more days and for our purposes this was a great place and fit our needs well.

“Shockingly poor maintenance - not recommended”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2009

We traded a week in Orange Lake, Orlando through RCI for this unit in Canmore to celebrate a special occasion. The location is excellent as it provides easy access just outside the gate of Banff National Park and the setting is lovely. The check in went smoothly enough and while a very small resort, appeared to have some promise. It started to fall apart for us when we entered the unit. The ceramic tiles were lifting in the foyer, the carpets were filthy. There was something splattered all over the lower cabinets in the kitchen and it looked like back window screen had been forced open and could not be closed. To top it off, there was a very offensive odour in the whole unit that could not be masked or eliminated with air freshener. It was pervasive and nauseating. Unfortunately I couldn't open the screen to air out the unit and when I complained to reception I learned there were no maintenance staff on hand to fix the problem. The sheets on the beds were not good quality although there were tvs in each bedroom. The two bathrooms were adequate. Overall I would have felt the unit was acceptable if it had been clean and in a proper state of repair. There are also a number of unfinished units where apparently construction has stopped. The hot tub was not working, the pool was adequate but small and I did not try the spa. The only Internet access we had was at the main desk.
