My family and I stayed at this hotel for one night. I had no idea what to expect as we've never stayed in Canmore before. To be honest, we only stayed at this hotel because hubby won a gift certificate at work to stay for one night free.
Let me first say, the hotel was clean and the lobby inviting. The front desk staff were very friendly and accommodating.
The room we were assigned was a deluxe room. Apparently, that means bathroom, small kitchenette, table, sofa bed, fireplace and loft bedroom with King. I didn't feel it was safe to leave little kids sleep on the sofa bed downstairs while we slept upstairs so I went to check out another room. The only rooms they had left were ones with two double beds. I knew my hubby wouldn't go for a smaller room so I decided we'd make it work. He slept on the sofa bed with one child, while I slept in the loft with the other.
Well, after spending time in various hotels around the world I've come to realize not everyone believes in updating furnishings. This hotel had done some remodelling but could have used newer furniture. The carpets seemed new but ours had mud or dirt stains in various spots. Compliments of inconsiderate hotel guests no doubt.
The king sized bed was nice and hard but I didn't mind. The sofa bed was not so nice from what I've heard. Bedding was just alright - sheets, a thin blanket and a coverlet. I've been spoiled at other mountain hotels with duvets.
I found the room stuffy and was pleased one of the windows could open. The windows were dirty which spoiled the mountain view but I suppose cleaning windows is not high on the priority list. Our fourth floor room faced the railway tracks which was either fun or irritating depending on your age. The kids loved watching the trains whiz passed at full speed. My husband and I thought the four that shook the hotel during the night was not conducive to sleep.
The great thing about plenty of trains is you can be up early to see the sunrise if you're lucky. It's always great to watch the sun rise over mountains.
With our stay we had two free breakfasts at the hotel restaurant. Our breakfast was pretty good despite me not being an egg person. Everything on the menu had eggs. No bagels, just toast. The restaurant wasn't busy and there was only one server working. Food was brought out when ready and was a good portion size. The coffee was warm which is my only complaint.
Aside from my disappointment with the decor, this hotel is okay for a short stay. Staff are friendly, the rooms mostly clean and if you're into trains, you must ask for the train track view. My only regret was not saving the piece of Rocky Mountain Soap Company's soap from the bathroom which was a lovely touch. A free night was a good deal but for me, I'll be checking out a few other quieter newer hotels next time we visit.
