We just got back from our week long winter wonderland vacation in Canmore-Banff, AB. The sanctuary between activities Worldmark provided was greatly appreciated. It's just a few minutes from downtown Canmore, 20 minutes from Banff, and about 45 minutes to Lake Louise. Everywhere you look there is the backdrop of the majestic beautiful Rocky Mountains. We loved the peace and quiet Worldmark's location provided and we were greeted at the entrance late Sunday night by a heard of 15-20 elk crossing the road in front of the Worldmark sign! We were pleasantly surprised with the helpful, nice and sincere people throughout our entire adventure! This area is a pool of happy people from all different countries. Good luck homing in on a true Canadian accent there!
ROOMS: Just like other visitors have posted. Fairly small, tight use of space but nice and clean. Full sized fridge, stovetop, NO OVEN, microwave, dishwasher and all the basic utensils and accessories you need. I did bring my own foil, plastic bags, travel mugs and thermos (to take coffee on the road). We stayed in #211 which was just down the hall from the large [free] laundry room and elevator. I snuck to do laundry in my PJ's comfortably. The 2nd floor has a door that takes you right into the underground, secure parking lot; a huge bonus to your chilly below zero celcius Winter visits. The shower/tub had a fairly tall shower head (for my tall BF) but the door swinging into the open area of the shower and toilet was annoying. Just roll w/it. For two of us with two ice coolers (we drove from Portland, Oregon) and lots of ski and winter apparel, the one bedroom worked out well. There was a decent amount of closet and dresser space. The views of snow covered mountains from the bedroom windows everyday was so refreshing.
FACILITY: There's a gear storage room at the entrance only guests w/room keys have access to. We stored my skis and poles in there and it looked like you could put bikes in there too. We used the pool and hot tub late one night. Before you head there, make sure you have your room key AND the code to get in the pool area. There is a hot tub and sauna indoors too. The outdoor [heated] pool has a small walk-in area indoors with a clear plastic curtain you push aside to get to the outdoor portion, while in the pool already. Nice thinking Worldmark! The workout room was just down the hall from the pool with a scale that said I was 15lbs lighter than I am. LOL. They have a good sized TV/entertainment room that was not being used the entire time we were there. It would be a great place to gather your whole family for movie night! The lobby had a pool table, fireplace, game room (buck hunter, air hockey, etc) and two desktop computers with [slow] internet access. I found out you have to pay for wireless and it would have cost me about $15 for the week. But if the wireless is as slow as the desktops, I don't think you'd be streaming much of anything.
CITY OF CANMORE: very low-key, comfortable pace, zero traffic, 5-7 minute drive to big grocery stores and gas station from Worldmark, easy to navigate, great restaurants of all types, fun places to shop, wildlife sightings, beautiful residential neighborhoods, wonderful place to go for a walk and activities/excursions nearby or within close driving range. You can even keep an eye on the town through a few live webcams on the Canmore/Kananaskis Alberta tourism website. Some locals said a lot of winter sport athletes live there so they can train at the Nordic Centre which is about a mile or so down the road from Worldmark. You should check it out since the Winter Olympics were held there once upon a time. Don't forget about the Curling Center on the other side of town! You can go there, grab a drink in the lounge and watch four games at once! Teams are practicing there but sometimes they have clinics and events where rookies and general public can participate. Most of the boutique stores closed at 7pm, some stayed open until 9pm. With it getting dark by 4:30pm, it provides a quiet evening every night. If you are looking for a hoppin' lively bar scene at night, you'd need to head into Banff. While we were there, 4th-11th, the weather was great and it seemed it was not the peak tourism time which was to our advantage.
ACTIVITIES: cross country skiing at the Nordic Centre, lots of neat stores to shop at, sled dog tours (that pick up from their Canmore offices), ice skating at the pond (it was in flood status when we were there), curling, museums, day spas (massage, pedi, mani, etc), horseback riding (Rafter 6 Ranch was only place open in Dec), Snowshoeing, snowmobiling, hiking, Banff Gondola (360 degree view of Rockies), Lake Louise, wildlife tours, 4+ ski resorts within the area and so much more!
WARNINGS: every time you enter Banff National Park you have to buy another day pass that lasts something like 26-28 hours. For the two of us in the truck it cost $20 every time. Depending on the activities you plan that can add up fast. If you time it right, two days in a row, you can get two trips into Banff for one day pass. When driving in the snow, check that your tail-lights are clean and visible. On the way home we got into a white-out like situation and we could hardly see people's brake lights! Groceries were almost double in Canmore compared to home (Portland, OR) so if you can lug some dry goods with you on your road trip, using the kitchens in the room, you can shave some costs. Just do your homework about border crossing fruit & veggie no no's.
