“Really poor”

I find the reviews on here really quite flattering. I work in customer service and understand how difficult it can be to please people at times. Therefore I'm never quick to moan about how poor something is.However, I thought this place was poor, especially for the £80 paid for the night. I would expect to pay around £60 for this standard, and I have plenty of experience with hotels.
The staff were not rude, but they just didn't really seem bothered. The hotel rooms were very dated. The bathroom was the main problem. So much so that I didn't shower! The shower was very old. Mould on the ceiling, and tiles looked black in the grouting. The paint on the shower door was peeling off, And then theres the bathroom door. Which wasn't even a door really, It was a sliding door that didn't even shut all the way. It left a gap of about 2 inches, which happened to be the side the toilet was. As much as I love my partner I don't really want to see him while on the toilet or hear him, and I certainly don't want to be seen or heard. The bed was also small. The door to the room did not lock well either. We must have stood there for 5 minutes trying to get the thing to lock! Everytime we went to reception there was nobody there. Just really poor in my view.

“Good value Sunday carvery”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2011

We visited the Beechwood Close for the Sunday carvery today for my birthday, we were a group of 6 including 3 teenagers. We were made to feel very welcome on arrival at the hotel and offered drinks in the bar. We were offered menus and shown to our table. The starters arrived and were good quality and tasty. The main course was a carvery and had a selection of 2 roast meats, a vegatarian option and mince and dumplings, also available were roast and boiled potatoes and vegetables. The food was hot, tasty and delicious. Desserts were reasonably good. Overall, a good choice for a good value Sunday lunch, I would visit again.

“Great Location, Great Service, Will Go There Again!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2010

My husband and I along with a friend, stayed at the Beechwood Close Hotel just for one night in December. We wanted to see the ice sculptures and Xmas stalls that were located in the Quarter during the weekend and also take in some last minute Christmas shopping. We arrived at the hotel mid-morning knowing that we wouldn't be able to check-in until noon, however, we planned on just leaving our car at the hotel car park, heading into York and checking in later. However, when we went to reception, we were told that our rooms were ready. As it turns out, ours wasn't quite ready as the maids were still cleaning, but they gave us clean towels and allowed us to freshen up in the room and leave our luggage in there while the room was cleaned. This was very welcome as we wanted to freshen up before we ventured into York.

Me and my husband had room 14 (twin) which was on the top floor and our friend had room 6 (single) on the first floor. Our room was fine, the bathroom was big with a bath/shower, plenty of towels and complimentary toiletries. The room had tea/coffee making facilities, an iron, hairdryer and was very cosy and warm - just as well because it looked like quite a lot of snow had fallen in the area during the previous week so it was still bitter outside. When we checked-in, the receptionist explained that there would be a party going on that evening but that the music would stop at midnight (licensing rules).

We slept OK and never heard the noise from the party as we were on the top floor, however, our friend said that she could hear the music but she got to sleep OK once it stopped.

We had a full English breakfast after helping ourselves to cereal, fruit juice and there was plenty to keep you going. A lovely pot of tea went down a treat!

We paid £151 altogether for the twin room and single room, breakfast included and also £14 of that was the bar bill.

The staff here were very helpful and polite and took their time to make sure that we enjoyed our stay, showing an interest in the purpose of our visit.

I would highly recommend this hotel if you are planning a short break in York. Location is perfect with just a 20 minute walk into York via Gillygate. Free parking at the hotel is a bonus as you can leave your car there and not worry about having to park in York itself. It is a 2 star but I think this is mainly due to it not having a lift. It is very clean and the rooms are fine.

I hope to be going back here next year with my best friend on a girly shopping trip.

“Just "average"”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2009

I stayed at this hotel recently as part of a small family group. I was not in charge of the travel arrangements on this occasion so I was not sure what to expect.

The hotel is convenient (ish) although is probably slightly too far away from York centre for most to consider walking, especially on a night time.

Check in was fairly pain free, no upfront charges etc and we were shown to our rooms by a lady who seemed to want to gossip about one of the other guests.

The room I have to say was a bit of a let down (for the price at least - £80). The size of it was fine and in fact the bathroom was very spacious but the decor was just grotty, it gave me the impression that it had not been changed for many years.

The bedroom had tea and coffee making facilities, a TV and details of local attractions. The bed was not too bad although right before we left my wife sat on it and found a spring jabbing into her bum!!

The bathroom was rather large, which begs the question why they only had a shower? and also of note was the fact that the blinds run vertically, which my wife only noticed once she had sat on the toilet and realised the angle of the blinds was exposing her to the rooms opposite.

Drinks in the bar were rather pricey I thought (£15 for a glass of wine, a bacardi and coke and a gine and tonic) and my Lemonade priced at £1.25 got my back up as I saw them pouring it from a bottle of Sainsburys Lemonade (a considerable mark up to be had there!!!)

Breakfast was probably the best thing about the place, full english which you can tailor to your own requirements plus a selection of pastries, juices etc.

Overall, it was just "average", I wouldn't stay there again and wouldn;t recommend it to a friend but nothing so bad I'd be compelled to complain about either.
