Booked this hotel the day before staying for £49. Looks nice from the outside. Reception is drab and dirty. Young man on reception didn't seem to know what he was doing. Our room wasn't ready so we were put in the honeymoon suite which was very nice. Bathroom and bed clean, carpets in desperate need of hoover.
No towels or hairdryer!!
Restaurant closed....didn't want to try it anyway after seeing all the muck in the place. Didn't have the breakfast either.
Gardens look nothing like the photo on the website, all overgrown and looking sad.
Would be a great place if it had an overhaul.

not as good as last time we stayed,no evening meals but was not told this when booking,nobody behind the bar so every time we wanted a drink I to go looking for someone to serve me.I don't

I had an overnight stay at the Gateway to York hotel Thursday 28th August 2008. Expecting something descent from a 3* AA Approved hotel.
After checking in I was informed the restaurant was not open for dinner and promptly handed a pizza delivery brochure! Walking into my room I noticed the bed was not made up and there was a very old but very noticeable blood stain on the cover! I called for a pizza delivery to find out I would be charged £3 delivery charge due to the pizza company having to deliver to a hotel.
Returning to reception to complain I was informed there were no further rooms available and the receptionist would "share" the cost of delivery when she joined me in ordering a pizza! I was gob-smacked! I demanded my £3 for the delivery charge back. I further enquired as to why the restaurant was closed only to be informed the chef left 2 MONTHS previous - failing to notice the sign which read - "Due to unforeseen circumstances the restaurant was not open". With the chef leaving over two months previous could hardly be down to unforeseen circumstances! Do you not need a restaurant for dinner if you have a 3* AA rating???
The back garden looked nothing like the website has you believed. The grass reached knee height and hadn't been cut for ages.
My favourite point worth mentioning is the fact that this so called "hotel" has a honeymoon suite. Imagine being handed a pizza delivery brochure on your honeymoon while checking into your hotel?
I don't have a rating for this hotel but rather a suggestion. Do not run a hotel of 30 rooms if you clearly can't manage it! A visit from the hotel inspector is duly overdue!
P.S I am still waiting for my £3 as promised!

Leaving it to the last day before booking and reading others reviews, I wondered if I had made the right choice.

Well, yes - I did really.

Yes it could do with a little tlc and a clean over but then you won't get the rates you've got.

Yes, the bathroom was very dated and you did feel like Coco the Clown with the mirror but it was all clean.

The breakfast was excellent and to walk around the grounds was nice too. It may need a cut mind.

The staff were very very freindly.

There was no bistro but the bar area was also nice.

All in all, a pleasant stay whcih can only be topped in that you are paying less than a travel lodge for a bed and breakfast.
