We found out about the Avalon Lodge because of a Living Social special that was offered in Sacramento. We were just excited to find a spot in South Lake Tahoe for the weekend to celebrate our 16th wedding anniversary. We were not sure what to expect as the website showed the rooms as very clean and plush but no real photos of the outside. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the lodge was right off of South Lake Tahoe Blvd. and Park Ave. Only 3 blocks from the beach, the casino's and Heavenly Village. We were a little worried upon arrival because as most of the hotels in the area, it looked shut down for the season. It also appeared upon first glance to be a rather rinky-dink lodge based on its age, but still held onto a sense of it being quaint and full of charm. We felt that the Avalon Lodge was South Lake Tahoe's little hidden secret with alpine charm. The folks in the reception area were very pleasant and helpful, in addition they offered many amenities that we did not even expect.
The parking was sketchy directly near some of the rooms, but there was plenty more parking available. Our room was absolutely gorgeous! Clean, plush, warm and comfortable beds, new furniture, new rugs, and paint, new tiles all added up to recently renovated rooms. As we went at the end of October it was quite chilly so we were very excited that each room had a gas fireplace. The bathrooms were beautiful with all slate floors, walls and shower. The bathrooms had all brand new fixtures, faucets, sinks, toilets. etc.; but our big disappointment was with the lack of a bath tub. The showers are huge although when showering the water is nice and hot, since it is all slate, and there is nothing but a shower curtain it gets cold super fast. Your feet are cold and the cold air just flows over the tops of the shower curtain. It took forever for me to warm up and that is not usually the case for me. It would have been nice if they has heated slate floors or even some sort of heating element in the bathroom at all.
Luckily they offered hot coffee, tea, chocolate or hot mulled cider with nice, large, heavy mugs in the reception area to help keep you warm. The rooms warmed fairly quickly with the gas fireplace as the only heating device in the rooms, but not in the bathrooms.
Free breakfast was offered with our stay, which were nothing to write home about, but better than nothing. Hot oatmeal, cold cereal and milk, juice, coffee, tea's, hot chocolate, and Greek yogurt with fresh fruit and they were supposed to have granola but it turned out to just be really hard granola bars chopped up into chunks. The large mugs of coffee were nice, plus each room had their own small coffee makers, small refrigerators, and a microwave.
With our Living social special we had a bottle of champagne, two champagne flutes, a box of gourmet chocolates, and wine tasting for two at the Apres Wines. It was a wonderful deal and will do it again when it is offered but never in the winter due to the bathroom situation.
Overall, we loved our stay at the Avalon Lodge but will limit our stays to a warmer season.
Room Tip: If the room has a bath tub it has not been renovated. The renovated rooms are more comfortable.
