A group of us stayed at the Mark Twain Lodge two weeks ago for a baseball tournament. Our room was very nice-newly remodeled with marble countertops, tile floors, a gas fireplace, a "mini" kitchen set up with a microwave, coffee maker and minifridge, and extremely comfortable beds. All of the rooms are nonsmoking which was a huge selling point. The property is only a 5 minute walk to the major casinos of Harrahs and Harveys and 2 long blocks to what appeared to be the newest shopping center in South Lake Tahoe which included grocery stores, restaurants, and many shops. The property itself is small (which we found to be an advantage-no need to worry about the noise from other guests) with only about 16 units. Each unit is set up a bit different where some offer a fireplace and some do not-some offer kings while others offer 2 doubles-some offer microwaves-while some just have coffee makers and minifridges. This was the only difficult thing that we encountered with having 6 families staying there at the same time- not all units were consistent with their equipment.....everyone was jealous because we had such a nice room that included all the "extras". For larger familes they have remodeled some units to work as 1 or 2 bedroom suites which appeared (I received a formal tour) to be very nice, a bit more money, but in my judgement worth the difference if you are going to have more than 4 people in a room. Those units offer jaccuzi tubs in addition to many other "luxury upgrades". The hotel manager Dave was very friendly and extremely accomodating. He offered to set up the BBQ for us and allow us to use the whole upstairs patio so we could have a cook out. They have a small gated pool but it was too cold to use it. One extra point that I will add is I am very sensitive to chemicals and always have a problem with hotel soaps and detergents that they use on the sheets and towells, I don't know what the Mark Twain happens to be using but their towells were soft and smelled good. I have travelled all over the world staying at many luxury resorts and while the Mark Twain Lodge was small it did offer special unique features that you generally only find at much more expensive resorts. The nightly room rate there was half the major casinos rate. The only thing I would improve on is the actual hotel lobby, which is merely just a small room accessed by a sliding glass door. It does not match up with the quality of the rooms and perhaps misleads (and worries) people upon check in. As the hotel owner I would be concerned that if people were stopping in to "shop" for hotels in South Lake Tahoe that they might passup the Mark Twain as the lobby does not do the rooms justice. This was my first trip to Tahoe and we are looking forward to returning soon and will stay again at the Mark Twain Lodge without a doubt.
