We were shopping for rates and checked around for a Saturday night stay when rates are generally higher in Tahoe. Inspected Quality Inn, Best Western and a few others.
Then we got to Valhalla, beautiful location on the lake with large balconies overlooking the lake. Grounds, pool, and reception were clean and tidy (although nothing special). So rather than reading reviews, I asked to see a room (with kitchen). The room we were given was front side overlooking the lake. Everything was in order and clean, just like a small condo on the lake. Staff were friendly and helpful, even added a sofa to the furniture in the room on request (although my son ended up using the extra bed provided in the closet which was made up, clean and free of charge). So we stayed.
After checking in, I read the horrible reviews and was really surprised so I did a really thorough inspection of the room. Couldn't find any place which wasn't clean except for some dust on the balcony chairs. Kitchen is white so dirt doesn't hide easily and it was properly equipped with silverware, pans, paper towels, dish soap, etc. Bathroom was also finished with off whites and wallpaper which looked relatively new, again couldn't find any fault. TV worked great with lots of channels. And Wifi worked although signal a little low (we were on the end corner unit). Heater thermostat worked perfect. Sheets and towels were off white and appeared to have been purchased that color as opposed to being dirty as another reviewer suggested. Paint both inside and out looked relatively new. When I requested an extra towel, I was given 3 sets with a smile rather than just one towel. And on and on.
So considering we paid 60 USD for what essentially amounts to an efficiency condo on the lake, I have to give the place a a decent review.
All this is not to say it compares with a really nice modern ski area condo resort. But we were quoted rates of 200 up for a condo when we checked at a property management office before stopping by here.
One thing which is true, the continental breakfast is nothing special, but how many places do a good breakfast at these prices?
Happy Traveling
PS - At any rate, the staff told me the property has been sold and remodeling will begin in 3 weeks.
Room Tip: Don't pay too much and don't expect more than a older resort on the beach at Lake Tahoe and...
