“The only place to stay on the lake!!!”

We first experienced the Valhalla back in 2007 during our family reunion, and ever since that day this was the place to stay. Right on stateline just a short walk to all of the action. Clean, cozy, and best of all, its right on the lake!! So if your in South Shore and need a place to relax and unwind, the Royal Valhalla is no waste of time.

Room Tip: Most all have a view.

“Stopped in without reading reviews first”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2011

We were shopping for rates and checked around for a Saturday night stay when rates are generally higher in Tahoe. Inspected Quality Inn, Best Western and a few others.

Then we got to Valhalla, beautiful location on the lake with large balconies overlooking the lake. Grounds, pool, and reception were clean and tidy (although nothing special). So rather than reading reviews, I asked to see a room (with kitchen). The room we were given was front side overlooking the lake. Everything was in order and clean, just like a small condo on the lake. Staff were friendly and helpful, even added a sofa to the furniture in the room on request (although my son ended up using the extra bed provided in the closet which was made up, clean and free of charge). So we stayed.

After checking in, I read the horrible reviews and was really surprised so I did a really thorough inspection of the room. Couldn't find any place which wasn't clean except for some dust on the balcony chairs. Kitchen is white so dirt doesn't hide easily and it was properly equipped with silverware, pans, paper towels, dish soap, etc. Bathroom was also finished with off whites and wallpaper which looked relatively new, again couldn't find any fault. TV worked great with lots of channels. And Wifi worked although signal a little low (we were on the end corner unit). Heater thermostat worked perfect. Sheets and towels were off white and appeared to have been purchased that color as opposed to being dirty as another reviewer suggested. Paint both inside and out looked relatively new. When I requested an extra towel, I was given 3 sets with a smile rather than just one towel. And on and on.

So considering we paid 60 USD for what essentially amounts to an efficiency condo on the lake, I have to give the place a a decent review.

All this is not to say it compares with a really nice modern ski area condo resort. But we were quoted rates of 200 up for a condo when we checked at a property management office before stopping by here.

One thing which is true, the continental breakfast is nothing special, but how many places do a good breakfast at these prices?

Happy Traveling

PS - At any rate, the staff told me the property has been sold and remodeling will begin in 3 weeks.

Room Tip: Don't pay too much and don't expect more than a older resort on the beach at Lake Tahoe and...

“Location, location, location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 October 2011

This is one of my favorite places. Yes the rooms were last decorated in the 70s but my rooms have always been very clean. The view is amazing so who is looking at the decor anyway, The hotel seems like it is isolated however it is just a short walk to the casinos, shopping and restaurants. This continues to be a place I stay when in Lake Tahoe. I have been coming here for over 20 years. The personnel are wonderful and have pointed us in the direction of several of our favorite restaurants in Tahoe.

Room Tip: If you want a lake view and a kitchen call the hotel to get a room on the end. If you do not not wa...

We stayed 2 nights and attended an annual golf tourtament. The grounds look great and the motel is 50 yards from a private lake tahoe beach. Your stay includes access to the beach. The room is another thing. The 9 pillow cases all had stains on them. One pillow case had a bloody booger on it. Most had mascara (I hope) on them. The sheets, also stained, didn't have that clean feel to them. I removed the pillow cases and we wrapped the clean towels on them to sleep. I threw the cases in a heap on the floor. There was remants of food between the beds and the night stand on the rug in addition to other soiled places. The toilet had butt splatter at the back of the bowl. In the morning we left early to go to our function and returned late in the evening. The bed were made with the same stained and bloody snot pillow cases, no vacuuming was done, and the butt splatter remained. Even as 3 golf slobs, we were replused. It was our fault that we didn't do anything about it because we were too tired and maybe lazy. If you love your wife, don't come here. Otherwise, it's perfect.

This hotel certainly is by the beautiful lake Tahoe, just walk across the street and you are there on the sandy shore of the lake. Drive 3 to 5 minutes and you are in center of all kinds of activities that you can enjoy or just walk for 2 or 3 blocks away. The room is pretty clean, the terrace however needs cleaning. Too many smoking rooms, even on the same floor with the non-smoking rooms. The carpeting needs to be brighten up a bit, the lobby and hallways definitely need new carpet/flooring. The staff are okay, but they do smoke a lot outside.
