“Not quite what we expected”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 October 2008

We followed their instructions and map up a tortuous track to the property to find not a quiet, peaceful "agriturismo" farmhouse, but a mini-hotel with a wedding in full flow. Our booking (made directly in Italian) had been mislaid. After we rejected the first room they offered (small, tiny window, smell of dust) they let us have the apartment (converted barn) which then had to be heated. This has kitchen, bathroom, living area downstairs, and two bedrooms up a spiral stair on a gantry under the (low) roof which is no joke if you are over six feet.

Dinner was very good. The menu was short, and appeared to consist of local produce Breakfast, however, was almost non existent. We decided to move on after one night.

If you have to go here be sure to take route on paved road from Longara - not the dirt track from Longare - locals there were almost unaware of the hotel and laughed when we showed them the map we were trying to follow - words like dangerous and brutal (the road, of course) sprinkled the conversation.

The establishment seems to be trying to be both an agriturismo and a venue for weddings and private parties. This does not quite work, as the guests looking for peace and quiet in the countryside do not appreciate being surrounded by the revelry. In our opinion there just is not room for both.

“Very nice, but soured with phone bill surcharge”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2008

I stayed for a couple nights with my mother and daughter after reading some reviews earlier. My objective was to stay in charming off the path that defy the typical sterile and bland hotel experience. To that, this place is gorgeous set in the Berici mountains. Our room was wonderful, and the property comfortable. No breakfast served at this time - can't recall if off season or what the reason.
For the negatives, there seemed to be a little confusion as to our reservation when we arrived (off season). The drive up was a little confusing, but we finally found the correct street out of the town Longare. The biggest problem was after being told that calls using an 800 Italian calling card were free, we were given a near $100 surcharge (about the cost of the room!!) for the calls I made (about 15 minutes using a calling card). We argued with the owners in their native language and were not compelled that this represented any actual cost. We paid about $30 as a gesture and left, though I still felt ripped off. After this experience, and the dearth of functioning pay phones in Italy, I will bring an international cell phone for future trips. So, if you can avoid touching the telephone, this place can be a wonderful place to stay, albeit off the beaten path a bit (though it is only a 15 minute drive to the Vicenza train station which we used for Venice, or to the autostrada).

“Charming Countryside Inn-Levescovane”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2008

Le Vescovane is a charming inn (agriturismo) in the countryside about 20 minutes outside Vicenzo. First the bad -- they lost our reservation and we showed up at the end of the "bridge week" when it seems all of Italy is on holiday. They were full and could not give us a room for the first 3 nights of a reserved 6 night stay. However, Luigi, the non-English speaking owner, was very kind and called all over trying to find us a place to stay. In the end we followed him in our car while he drove us thru the hill side back towards Vicenzo to check out a couple places for us to stay. I did have trouble after making the reservation in getting my email answered just prior to our leaving for Italy. I wanted to make sure everything was in place and we had our reservation still. I finally did get a confirmation email about 1 month prior to our stay. though it turned out not to matter. Perhaps the lack of English comprehsion caused this. All the emails I had with Luigi had very good English so I did not suspect that he did not speak any English at all.

Now the Good -- We did return after 3 nights staying elsewhere to find the place jam packed with a wedding apparently drawing to a close. We still were not able to move into the room we had reserved and stayed in a smaller room next to it. It was fine for 1 night -- bed was comfortable. Dinner that night was okay and it was the only night we ate there since the restaurant was closed the rest of our stay.

Finally we got moved into the rooom we reserved--a large room with a lovely view out across the hills. We loved this comfortable, roomy bedroom and enjoyed the 2 nights we stayed in it.

Breakfast was typical Italiam breakfast -- it was fine. We had the place to ourselves the last 2 nights and the few times we needed staff we just went into the back of the kitchen and they were always wiling to help us. The pool was still being worked on.

Its location is up a winding hill and I'm not sure i would have wanted to drive back home to it for 6 nights, so perhaps it worked out better to have stayed only 3 nights. It is in a beautiful location, peaceful and quiet with great views.

“Charming Bed & Breakfast – with a hard bed and a poor breakfast…”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2008

Le Vescovane is supposed to be what Italians call an Agriturismo – a sort of countryside bed & breakfast, often a small farm offering their own products in cosy surroundings. However, Le Vescovane is more like a small hotel without the normal facilities of a hotel…
When finding Le Vescovane on the internet, we were charmed by the beautiful pictures, and we were not disappointed. It IS charming and beautifully situated in the countryside in the middle of the green hills of Veneto between Venice and Verona.

THE PLACE AND ITS SITUATION
We heard that Le Vescovane was difficult to find – even with a detailed description or a GPS (as the address does not figure). Well, it was easy for us, we simply plotted in the longitude and latitude positions which are 45°28’26 – 11°34’37).
There was a splendid view from most of the room overlooking the garden and the (new, large, impressive) pool. Le Vescovane really offers a lot of Italian charm, both inside and outside.
We were happy to enjoy the peace and quiet – until our last day when the restaurant had been booked for a local wedding party. We were not informed about this and were surprised to see 50-60 people and a dance orchestra occupying both the garden and the restaurant the entire evening. We were relegated to our room (and chose to spend the evening in Vicenza). The music stopped at midnight, luckily.

THE ROOM
We had a large family room furnished with traditional Italian country life furniture. There was a king size bed (too hard as well as dent in the middle) and two also too hard single beds. There was an aircon (that did not work quite well) and a minibar. The bathroom was a bit small with a shower that did not work to well either (to much chalk = water running poorly).
NB: If you bring your towel to the pool (what you need to do because there are not extra towels at the pool), while your room is cleaned, you will not get a clean towel! You need to leave your towel on the floor the get a clean one – or to ask for new ones.

THE RESTAURANT
The breakfast is very poor and simple. OK, we knew already that the great “cucina italiana” that we normally admire, does not include breakfast, and we have experienced quite a few hopeless Italian breakfasts. But this beat the record! A cup of coffee, a few plastic wrapped dry crackers with marmelade (albeit homemade) and a yogurt, that’s it! For an international vacation spot with guests from around the world and with a pricetag above average this is simply not good enough.
You eat well in the restaurant at night, though. The plates are well made, it’s good quality food – mainly made from their own products. However, the menu card was only in Italian. That seemed a bit strange since most of the guests were foreigners not speaking Italian and caused confusion and discussion at many tables.
We could not order a Coke or another soft drink. We could choose between wine, water or juice... If we wanted something else, they told us to go and fetch it in our minibar :-/ It’s true that a bottle or can of Coca Cola does not smarten up a well made table, but could not they just simply pour it up in the kitchen – or offer a Sprite which looks like water…?
Besides, do not choose the wine called San Rocco, if you think it is their local wine. (Le Vescovane is situated on Via San Rocco and we thought it was their local wine). It’s good – but from Sicily!:-D Ask specifically for their own wine, if you want to taste it.

THE POOL
The new pool was – as mentioned above - great and the pool area was spacious with a sufficient number of brand new deck chairs. The modern maritime boat deck layout of the hardwood/steel pool area does not quite fit in - but who cares when the sun is shining and the birds are singing... We could add: And the goats are smelling. Because close to the area is a large enclosure with animals, primarily goats, cows and pigs. Every time we bathed, we were met by the rural smell of country animals and we needed to remind ourselves that this is in fact an agriturismo and NOT a hotel. This was an extenuating circumstance. Maybe it’s a plus if you come there with children. The goats are very curious and sociable (just don’t tell the kids that they may eat them later on in the restaurant;-)).

STAFF/TENANTS
We were a bit disappointed by the staff/managers. A few years ago we went to an agriturismo in Tuscany and had a great stay. The couple that managed it were very friendly, open and informative – always attentive and interested in their guests’ well-being. At Le Vecovane it was almost the opposite. They treated us with a sort of indifference and cool distance. Often a distance so big, that we could not find them when we needed them:-/. The staff seemed overworked at times and could not manage to provide a reasonably good service even though they perhaps wanted to.

Resume
Le Vescovane is perfect if you look for a small authentic and charming accommodation situated in the beautiful northern Italian country side close to both Venice (take the train!), Verona and Vicenza. Le Vescovane is NOT perfect if you search for a place that offers good service or if you hope for warm, smiling and familiar tenants.

“Great experience”

We booked this hotel based on the recommendation that was posted on your site from the couple who"got engaged there".We checked in on a Monday and from what we can gather most things in Italy seemed to be closed on Mondays!! There was hardly anybody around when we checked in but the staff was very friendly. Very charming, stone walls and beautiful grounds. Our room was spacious but warm! Their restaurant was closed that evening so the lady recommended a place only about 500metres down the road called Osteria Alla Quercia. Of course the menu was all in Italian and the owners did not speak english, but that added to our enjoyment. They were so so friendly and we had a wonderful meal. It was one of our favorite experiences during our trip. Also the drive to Le Vescovane is beautiful. We had no difficulty finding it and my husband enjoyed driving the windy roads along the way!
