“Fairly Average Hotel, but NOT too bad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

I spent a couple of pre-Christmas days at the Diplomat hotel and found it to be quite pleasant and well located (for those with a vehicle).

The hotel is entirely non-smoking, staff were always courteous and helpful, no issues there at all. Free wifi throughout the hotel is worthy of note. The room was comfortable enough, and offered the standard fittings and fixtures, including a window which could be opened to allow in some fresh air. Shower was hot and strong, perfect!

From a critical standpoint, I found the bed was much too soft and spongy, a real disappointment. The hotel was very quiet at the time with low occupancy, so consequentially the food served up could best be described as "plain". The carpets have assorted stains which didn't particularly bother me, but may bother others. Housekeeping left the room clean and tidy, but inexplicably didn't straighten the bed-sheets under the covers. While I don't expect the sheets to be changed daily, after the first average night's sleep it was a disappointment, the following night, to pull back the bed-sheets and find the under-bedding in the same disarray I had left them in that morning.

If you're not an overly critical traveller, on the whole, you will likely be satisfied by the Diplomat Hotel and the competitive rates they offer.

“Could have done better.”

This was the first time we stayed here although we know the area well. Free wifi throughout the hotel was a bonus. Our room was right next door to the kitchen (1008) with the door facing the dining area. Soundproofing needs to be improved in this particular room. We could clearly here conversation of late night diners and to a lesser extent kitchen noise. Rooms were clean and beds comfortable.

Room Tip: Higher floors away from kitchen and dining area

“The best Reception staff ever!”

Stayed in this lovely hotel for 2 nights and have to say the welcome on arrival was the best ever. As we were travelling from the UK we needed directions and information which were answered with ease, taxis booked, directions given, recommendations for places to visit, fabulous. Our room was a good size, but the carpet had seen better days, which therefore made the room seem a bit grubby. Had dinner in the restaurant on the first night, which was really enjoyable. Free internet access, newspapers and wi-fi added to the really nice atmosphere of this hotel. Even managed to get a really early breakfast delivered to the room as we had a very early start one day, like the idea of items being individually available rather than having to have a 'package' deal. Didn't get to use the swimming pool or gym, but they are available to all hotel guests. Would recommend this hotel, a lovely relaxing, quiet location after spending a couple of weeks previous in the heart of the city.

“Our favourite hotel in Canberra”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

We stayed at the Diplomat for 2 nights with my parents. I requested a room with a walk in shower and not too many stairs for them. The booking all went smoothly. On checking in the reception staff were great and we had 2 rooms just next to reception and the bar/restaurant. I was initially concerned that it may be very noisy but it wasn't. If the bar was busier those ground floor rooms may be noisy. As the hotel has a lift to all floors I will probably request a room on the 2nd floor next time. The rooms were very clean and comfortable but the mattress in our room was probably at the end of its life. The added touch of magazines in the room (Marie Claire, Vogue, National Geographic) and complimentary newspapers at reception and free Wifi throughout the building was great. If you don't have a laptop with you there is a desktop PC with complimentary internet adjacent to the bar. The shower was excellent and although the bathroom was compact was in good order and the lighting was brilliant. The food was good for breakfast and dinner and the staff were very pleasant. Overall this hotel has a great feel to it and we will definitely stay here again.
