“Lovely garden setting but this hotel is no where near a 5 star. Overpriced!”

We stayed here on a 2 nights package for our wedding anniversary. We stayed in the Panorama Deluxe incl breakfast, one evening Kantoke meal and a 2 hours trek to a nearby village (not Karen Village). We did not feel that we received value for money after paying THB$12,000 - approx US$198 per night. We have been to Asia and Thailand on a number of occasions in Chiang Mai, Phuket, Bangkok, Pattaya and felt that this hotel lacks the high quality standard of accommodation and customer service that we have experienced and become accustomed to in Thailand. I would give the accommodation a 3 star, after all you don't expect to find cracked glass and walls, peeling paint, dirty curtains and little attention to detail in a 5 star hotel. These flaws will not be seen in a superior bed and breakfast in Chiang Mai. Below is a list of the pros and cons based on our experience.

Pros:
-beautiful waterfall and garden setting especially at night
-lovely fresh flower bouquets in room on arrival
-bottle of bins 2 wine on arrival (cost approx US$20 at the supermarket)
-reasonably priced food
-lovely candlelight Kantoke dinner overlooking waterfall
-huge bathtub in room

Cons:
-Beware: the hotel charges THB2000 for return transfers from the airport. We arranged transfers for THB1000 half the price when we got to Chiang Mai airport.
-Cracked window, peeling paint, dirty curtains, dark room, tacky bathroom, furnishings in the room were below the standard of a 4 star much less 5 star (see photos attached).
-Lack of attention to detail. Friendly staff but lack customer service training. One eg - during dinner we asked one of the waiters to open a bottle of wine for us. He did so and placed the bottle on the table without pouring the wine in the glasses for us. This will not happen in a 5 star hotel/restaurant. Another eg - we called reception to let them know that there was no electricity in the room. Problem was sorted in about 5mins after they put the generator on but we never received a courtesy call to ask whether the lights were back on/or if all was fine.
-Husband found an insect in his glass of fruit juice during breakfast
-Cost of foot massage in Chiang Mai city THB$150. Cost of foot massage at this hotel's spa approx THB$1200
-No assistance with transferring luggage on check out
-Painfully slow wifi

Finally, we had a perfect stay at Aruntara resort in Chiang Mai prior to staying at Sukantara and would definitely recommend Aruntara for a superior 5star quality at a fraction of the cost.

“Trapped in paradise”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 May 2011

I was so excited with the idea of staying in a luxury eco-tent over a waterfall. The pictures made the hotel seem so tranquil and peaceful, but in reality it was isolated, empty. It felt like you were a prisoner to the hoteliers for food (which was not all that great), entertainment (DVDs) and transport, and they could charge whatever amount they wanted. Chiange Mai, city center was more than an hour away and we had to depend on our hoteliers for everything.

The eco-tent would have been lovely if it hadn't rained the whole time we were there. We ended up getting holed up in our room as we tried to stay dry. The bedroom was nice and it felt luxurious, but the bathroom itself was scary because rotted wood would fall on the floor and bathtub, rain would drip into the room, there was hardly any light and windows wouldn't shut, thus allowing bugs to get in.

The spa and the hotel were overpriced. We were glad to experience the stay for 2 days but were looking forward to head back to civilization into the heart of Chiang Mai.

“5 star location but appalling quality service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 February 2011

Sounds as though I've contradicted myself re location! It's in the middle of the most beautiful waterfall and woodland but you and are 9km from the nearest form of civilisation. The location relative to everything else is miles away yet we were led to believe it was just outside Chiang Mai. It will costs you at least a 900Baht round trip, if there's anyone there to take you and we were told it would be an hour's wait. if you want to go out to eat in Chiang Mai, it's 30km away - we rented a scooter but is still cost us 1,600 Baht to get to the rental shop. The food in the resort restaurant was awful and they are obviously abusing their monopoly. Our tent was stunning once inside but all the wood it's been built on is rotting away so we had to be very careful not to fall through it - it's only been built for 5 years so you'd have thought they'd have treated the wood properly. It was the most expensive place we have ever booked in Thailand and we'd have had better service and food in a guest house, as we did in other parts of Thailand. Frustratingly, every time we spoke to someone, their stock answer was "ok, yes" Admittedly, we're not fluent in Thai but, if they are boasting a 5 star resort, some form of communication would have been good.

“A hidden Gem and a paradise on earth.”

A marvelous place to visit. Beutiful scenery. I spent 4days and will surely visit this place again. If u need a peaceful and relaxation place to stay this is the best place to visit. In addition, the 3 peacocks at the resort are beautiful.

“Very disappointing”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2011

Property:
Breathtaking, out-door scenery that one would only see on a post card.

Location:
Very far from the city. Once in town, it was quite hard to get a cab in the evening willing to take up back to the resort.

Room cleanliness:
Very poor. There were dead bugs in my bed the night I arrived that I has to dust off. The bedding was also moist, wet-feeling). There were also live ants in my friend's bed in the next-door room. He woke up the next morning with red itchy dots all over his body. In addition, there were food stains on the coffee table with a bunch of ants hovering on it. Also a bunch of ants on the area rug which was under the coffee table. Scratch marks and stains were visible on the floors and on some areas of the walls as well as spider webs on the drapes and in the bathroom closet (along with dust). The room was also a over scented as well.

Room decor:
A bit tacky and cheap looking. Does not have a warm, 'inviting' feeling.

Mini bar:
Very poor. This consisted of a serving tray with two snack items on it; One small pack of "peanuts with anchovy trail-mix" (very uncommon) and a pack of sunflower seeds. There was a small refrigerator in the room, with an ice tray compartment that would not freeze the water (after I left the try in there overnight).

Air conditioning:
Our room had remote-control air-conditioner, however there was no option for heating. It was very cold at night (to the point where the staff is wearing winter coats). Our room was freezing and the bathroom was the coldest. it felt as though you were outside.

Breakfast:
Limited options with three choices "American", "Thai" or "Continental".
It was very hard to order and communicate with our server (who happens to be the hotel's driver as well). The food was of poor quality consisting of cheap cereal, bread and tea. Very unexpected for a five-star hotel.

Staff:
The staff was friendly but it was a huge language barrier to communicate. Accept for one person, no one spoke English.

Overall this resort was very disappointing and is no where near five-star quality.
