We stayed here for one night whilst on a sea kayaking trip with Seven Skies (an Australian luxury adventure company).

We had a a cabin close to the main reception area, which consisted of a living room, a bedroom with a queen bed and a bedroom with twin beds. It was all fairly comfortable although a little tatty in places, and the bathroom was small and in need of refurbishment.

It rained heavily during the afternoon that we were there, which wasn't a problem in itself, but there was a hole in the roof above the queen bed, which meant that it got soaked. There were a few other buildings that I thought were also in need of some care and attention.

The food and hospitality were fine, if nothing to rave about.

Would I recommend this hotel? If you're on a sea kayak and coming from Kota Kinabalu, then yes it's a perfectly decent place for a stop-over. If you're wanting to come by boat from Kota Kinabalu to an island resort for a while, then I would suggest that you stay at either Gayana Eco Resort or Bunga Raya Resort (both on Gaya Island).

“Manukan Island Resort, Truly Romantic Escape!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2011

I have just stayed in Manukan Island Resort last week, it was a surprise anniversary gift from my fiancee! He booked a Beach Villa for our weekend stay. The rooms are tastefully furnished, the bathroom amenties, they have it all, name it, from A-Z..

Our Villa is located right at the Beach front, i could hear the wave even when i was sleeping in my room, the feeling is so amazing!

Have a walk by the beach at night, feel the breeze on your face, watch the star filled up the dark sky. I have no better words of decribing the feeling of being there.

The services of Manukan staff? Excellent! on the second night of our stay, it gets rainy around 7pm, time to have our dinner at the restaurant, instead, with just 1 phone call, the restaurant staff deliver the dinner to our Villa.

I have stayed in all island resorts around Kota Kinabalu, i am confident to say, no other island resorts is better than Manukan Resort around this area. Allt he services are 5 Stars!

“it's about the island, not the hotel”

If you love nature and like to rough it out, the resort is for you. I like the island-style accommodation setting - wooden structures and beautiful surrounding landscaping. But that's about it - now go out and enjoy the island!

Nothing much one can do after sunset, so I hope they can include some recreational activities (pool, board games, etc), otherwise you are stuck with satellite television in the rooms.

Service wise, it's good but I feel the food can be served a little faster.

The island itself is beautiful although not the best I've been to.

“Lovely, definately stay a night or two - so much better than just a day trip!”

We loved our stay at this resort. Only down side was that we were the only guests on the island for both nights we were there, so felt bad about having 3 waitresses and 2 bar staff just for us.
Rooms are huge and have everything you need. I like that there is a downstairs lounge with TV rather than it being in the bedroom.
So lovely to walk the 1.5km to the lookout at sunset, take the unmarked path if you are able to decend to the rocks and you get a much better view than from the actual lookout.
We enjoyed the snorkelling and especially if you get up a little early and hit the reef before the daytrippers arrive - buy the fish food its a real treat to be followed by 100 fish when they see the bottle - we also found nemo!
At nights we had the entire beach to ourselves for an evening dip in the warm clear water.
Food is ok, bar is good.
Highly recommend the splurge. Stay here and save your day trips for the other islands.

“For the short-of-time traveler who wants to experience a resort in Sabah”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2009

Pretty much decent and nice if you are short of time while visiting Sabah or Kota Kinabalu. The resort is just 10 minutes from K.K town by boat. A little over priced but they dominate this as they are the only resort there.

The beauty about this place is the Sunset Views, Excellent! And the snorkeling is great too. Try the Scuba Doo Underwater Walking experience while at Manukan. Something different.

Overall, worth a days stay if you are short of time and want to experience the island resort living.
