“warm yorkshire welcome for walkers”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 May 2009

From the welcoming glass of Pinot Grigot when we arrived to the mansized BLT sandwiches halfway up the dale, Andy and Caroline could not have done more for our spring walking holiday. Our rooms were spotless, the breakfasts were splendid traditional English (with porridge as an option), and Amerdale is situated half way up a remote Yorkshire Dale in glorious countryside. Andy prides himself on his kitchen, and the food is local and delicious.
A word of warning - you will need a walk to burn off some of those calories...

If you want, fantastic food, amazing views, lovely, kind people, relaxation and just the most romantic place ever, then Amerdale House is for you....We had our wedding here this weekend, it was the most amazing day ever, yes it's off the beaten track, but that's why you should go - Andy and his team are so talented, nothing is too much trouble, the food is to die for, all home-grown and reared by themselves.....treat yourselves, book to stay, you won't be disappointed.

“Fabulous retreat in the countryside”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 April 2009

This is friendly, well run hotel in deepest Yorkshire countryside with hearty food not for the fainthearted. Food is honest and unpretentious sourced as locally as possible, gorgeous home made sausages and black pudding the best i have ever tasted. Lovely homely rooms with gorgeous views of the garden and countryside. Staff are professional, friendly and hilariously funny all adding to the relaxed feel of the hotel. Good value for money with a fixed dinner, bed and breakfast rate. We cant wait to go back.

“Somewhere you would recommend without hesitation”

Amerdale House is one of those jewels in the crown that you want to tell everyone about but you don't want them ALL to go - in case you can't get in next time! It's exactly what it says on the tin - a restaurant with rooms. Like a previous reviewer, I would say too that it's an excellent restaurant with rooms. In fact, I'd be hard pressed to find a better restaurant in London and certainly not one where you would get the sort of personal service and welcome you get at Amerdale House.
So, let's start with the food. It's quite the best food ever (although save up your appetite for the evening and definitely don't have lunch when staying there - a hearty walk does the trick nicely). All the meats are terrific - this time the pork and the lamb were just out of this world. Add to this the homemade black pudding with scallops starter and the to-die-for creme brulee, to say nothing of the prawn cocktail (so different) and the chocolate brownie I can still taste - and served beautifully. It's all a real gastronomique experience not to be missed. Andy is a great chef and deserves all the accolades he receives.
Then there are the rooms. I've been in three altogether and they are all great - comfortable, beautiful views of the amazing landscape outside, and I just love the Molton Brown bits which they provide.
Then there are the walks and the scenery. They take you a million miles away from the humdrum of daily life and, for a few lovely hours, you can imagine the peace and tranquility of living there.
And lastly, there is the welcome from Caroline and Andy and their really friendly staff. They have an infectious love for the place and great enthusiasm. It just makes you want to back time and time again - and we shall!

“A restaurant with rooms”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 December 2008

Having read all the good comments about Amerdale house we decided to book a Christmas break there.

On arrival the welcome was very friendly and we were shown to the room which was a reasonable size with a warm comfortable king size bed and views over the gardens to the hills beyond. The hotel is very well presented and decorated throughout with lots and lots of cushions !

On entering the drive and just through the gate there is a sign saying "a restaurant with rooms" and this is true although I would go further and say a "very good restaurant with rooms" as the food is excellent. The number of locals eating lunch there testified to this and speaking to some of them they stated that the food was consistently good

The village of Ancliffe is very small with a pub, a church and a river running though it. That covers the sights but it is a great walking area with lots of walks from the village.
