“I'd Stay Here Again, the Next Time. You should too!”

My wife and I traveled by car throughout Mexico. On our way home from Puerto Vallarta, we decided to do the Copper Canyon train ride. My wife had been once before and said it was worth doing twice. Instead of leaving from Los Mochis, the terminal of the train line, we decided to leave from El Fuerte ( the first stop east of Los Mochis.) The usual reviews of hotels was available, but we drove into El Fuerte and went to the town plaza. Across the street we discovered La Choza Hotel. Just what we were looking for. A central courtyard to park our loaded car while we took the train ride. Rooms were large, comfortable and clean. I thought the price of 550 pesos was well worth it. They let us leave the car in the courtyard at no charge. They arranged for a taxi in the morning to take us the 5 Km to the train station. (100 pesos) There is an attached restaurant where we had breakfast and they prepared two sandwiches for us to take on the train.

Upon our return two days later, we stayed the night again and retrieved our car which was as we left it.

“Good hotel, good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 April 2010

The hotel is within walking distance of the bus which had brought us here from Los Mochis and is right in the centre of town. The grounds and buildings are very attractive and the room was comfortable. Good sitting out areas and we saw 10 hummingbirds at the same time on the feeders !! The dinner we had in the restaurant was a mixed experience – we were the only patrons (Fuerte was very quiet when we were there) but that is still no excuse for mopping the floors around us !! However, my stuffed bass was excellent.
Did an excellent kayak trip on the river through 3 Amigos who arranged our tour (separate report Things to Do In El Fuerte) and had the worst ceviche I have ever had in 3 years living in Central America in the El General restaurant (separate report El Fuerte Restaurants). Good lunches at Wings and Beer (separate report El Fuerte Restaurants).

“They need more warmth, light, smiles.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2009

It's a great setting but the staff was unfriendly (no greeting, no smiles), too many things were lacking in the room (we had to ask for a 2nd towel, a 2nd glass, and to have the lamp fixed, and even with it fixed, the light was so dim it was hard to unpack and pack), and the mattress was even harder than most Mexican mattresses. The restaurant La Diligencia was great however (even the staff).

“Hotel La Choza was great.”

We stayed at this hotel along with another couple in Oct. 2008 on our way and our way back from the CHEPE train trip up to Creel and the Copper Canyon. We left our vehicle parked in the courtyard while we were gone 4 days. Felt very good about leaving it there. The hotel has so much character, room well decorated, clean and more than we expected in El Fuerte. We drove into El Fuerte and up to the hotel and booked in. They had a vacancy and no problem. Booked a return room at that time.
Close to the museum, square, municipal palace and other colonial buildings.

“Nice hotel but we weren't made to feel welcome.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2008

Really sweet authentic Mexican rooms, clean and nicely decorated we were very happy with them. It was just a shame we were made to feel like an inconvenience. I had emailed them with our flight and bus details along with out ETA and we arrived as arranged about 10pm. The person behind the desk checked us in and handed us our key without one word or a smile. We were then left to find our room on our own, eventually we worked out the section it was in that it was upstairs and got our bags in and sorted. We went down to the restaurant which seemed to be waiting for us and had a nice meal, I wouldn't be surprised if we weren't the only people staying there. We went back to our room to drop off our bag and go for a walk and look around the town. However in the less than 5 minutes it took us to do that we found we had been locked in the hotel grounds and all lights had been turned off! So we had no choice but to go to bed! We really felt they would rather we had not come. The one piece of info we could have done with (and they could have let us know by email) is that when you get off the bus from Los Mochis you don't need a taxi to get to the hotel as it is less than one blocks walk!

  • Liked — Authentic rooms.
  • Disliked — Made to feel unwelcome.
