I´m a Canadian from BC and I work as an exploration consultant in all parts of Mexico in the winters. I spend only 70 days at home each year. The rest is spent travelling.
I´ve stayed at the Posada Hidalgo. It is a typical overpriced, over hyped and underserved Gringo hideout that mascarades as authentic Mexico. Other than for the lack of marketting, the Rio Vista should be first on the list. But slick marketting would kill the place.
The Rio Vista is a $45/night (don´t tell your travel package company I told you the price) suberb authentic Mexican hotel. These hotels are in every town. You just need to find them (you just found one here). The Rio Vista is tucked in behind the museum. The driveway will make you think you will be robbed by banditos at the end. But this hotel oozes charm, warmth and authenticity. Yes, most of the guns on display really work. No the coins in the open displays aren't worth anthing. Yes the bulls in the hacienda below are from a real family and not there as tourist props.
The hotel is quiet, clean and real. This is the style I search out in all the places I work in Mexico. They are getting harder to find. But the Rio is one of the best.
Do yourself a favour and stay at the Rio Vista if you are in El Fuerte. This is what Mexico was 25 years ago where value wasn't measured by American Express travel points.
I liked this hotel so much I´ve put a link on my own website at www.geoqwestexcursions.com. Feel free to contact me and I'll tell you more about the place. I'll be back there on the 10th of Dec 2007 and again in January. Cheers...Geoqwest
